Only on Linux?

^
Yup. And Wine can run pretty much anything these days. And, with the computers these days there are more than enough resources for VMWare.

Access 2003 or 2007? GoogleTalk? There are a lot of things WINE runs and runs very well, but I hit enough roadblocks with it to abandon that approach and adopt VirtualBox.

but to what end? Yeah I could run windows in VMWare but why?

For me windows does what I want, Linux doesn't - YMMV and all that...
Security by itself is a good enough reason IMO. Recently my brother got a rootkit virus on his XP install and coincidentally a couple of days later the bank called to tell him his credit card had been compromised (and yes he was running a firewall, had the windows updates, and regularly ran a virus program). In fact every single windows install I have ever dealt with has gotten a virus at one point in time, while this has never been the case for me with Linux. Windows is inherently insecure because the centralized hierachical profit-first structure of MS has created a frankenstein the programmers don't understand or don't have time to fix.

If this wasn't bad enough MS inserts backdoors to let their buddies at the NSA (who they actively work with) break into computers the want (google "NSA Key" or check out what microsoft has done to their 'random' number generator needed to encrypt files if you don't believe me). Not only does this create a privacy hazard from the NSA snooping into your private property it indirectly enables clever hackers and foreign governments to do the same.

As to specifics of what Linux can do that Windows can't it all depends on what you are doing... For me I put my entire CD collection on a USB harddrive, but in windows whenever I turn this on to use it, it's letter frequently changes depending on for example if I had inserted a flash drive first or not) which wrecks all my music paths because that letter doesn't exist. This is not a problem with linux. In linux I can also effortlessly convert any music file to any format I want including ripping CDs. Music is just one such example... Backing up my DVD's is easier, running a webserver is certainly easier, installing multiple OS's is easier and much more from my point of view.

Never has a virus, rootkit or well anything in 20 years....

You make good points about your usage but none of those things interest me. In addition, live mesh (and the fact that I've just got an exchange account) has really locked me into the OS. I just get up and go, no flash drives nothing - it's just... easy...

Could be that you have had one but haven't been aware of it. Virus scanners vary so much...

The popular email client 'Evolution' has support for exchange accounts. As for live mesh there are a number of solutions for web folders plus synchronization... Have you tried dropbox?

What MAXIMUMPC says about Linux.

Configure the OS without a text editor. Requiring manual configuration of the Xorg.conf file is inexcusable in 2008.

Never the less, I'll be ordering my netbook with Linux. For just music, data and picture files and wifi. I guess I won't have any problems.

But where's the value - my system does what I want it to do, I get done what I need to do as I need to do it. I just have no need to look at those alternative. Seriously, the "honest if you try" tactic is lost on me, I tried it, I've tried it a number of times and as a business owner and as a user I prefer windows.

As for evolution - it's ok for a freebie, but I prefer outlook.
