Online Petition Bring Back Kathryn Janeway!

Actually, Sisko is back in the books, and has even rejoined Starfleet (for the Borg war), so there ya go, GS.

You may be a less critical poster than some, but, trust me, there was a time when any poster who positive comment on Voyager would be laughed off the board as a Star Trek "lightweight."

I've often felt that ENT is what rescued VOY from that hate fest, something new for the haters to feast upon. I wasn't here then, I was on a Star Trek mailing list which I eventually left because 80% of it was old guard Trekkies bashing VOY and then eventually ENT into pulp.

Just as an example, when I first heard that Janeway was killed in PD's book, I made a comment that it was a shame to kill off a character who was the first female captain and a role model to so many young girls who need encouragement to go into math and science. I was immediately castigated for calling her the "first female captain" because there were so many others--like Rachel Garrett of the Enterprise C, and other females briefly on the screen. The responders knew that I meant the first female captain star of a series, but decided to "play dumb" and show off their Star Trek knowledge, I suppose, while displaying my ignorance. As for the "role model" comment, they used the "f" word--just more "feminist" posing. I suppose they believe that Janeway isn't a role model for young girls, or that young girls don't need encouragement (or shouldn't try) to go into math and science. Mulgrew has constantly been told by female fans that her character was a role model. The point is that my post was not taken seriously and basically made fun of. Too bad they didn't run me off, no?

heh..I have been able to pass on my Trek love to my sons friends a lot this year, some as a result of them seeing the most recent movie. I get them started on VOY first. This is partly because I think the stories can really grab that age group (13ish) with their adventure element while being less dated than TNG and TOS and not having the complex political elements of DS9. But I also pass it on because I enjoy that these young boys first big Trek experience has a female captain. And they LOVE VOY. I'm up to the fifth boy now. I can't help but think this has some positive effect on their gender perceptions.

Also, I didn't realize Kira was kind of the major player now, sans Sisko. To be fair, though, he was "killed" in the show, not so much the books. You go into the books knowing that.

This is funny, I keep reading that he was killed in the show but when I first saw the finale long before relaunch it never entered my head that he was killed. I figured he was with the prophets who had spewed other people who were with them back into the corporeal linear world intact.

And yes he is a minor player in relaunch. Kira has had a lot of attention, notably in the first two books. Other books have told stories quite removed from the stars of the show, such as the Iliana Ghemor story. It's pretty good actually.. and I think VOY relaunch could have been handled similarly. If there wasn't a Janeway story to be told at the moment fine, she doesn't have to be on every page. But she would still be alive and the potential for a Janeway story would not be GONE FOREVER.

I think Lady Q is very much the same situation for Janeway that the prophets were for Sisko. She isn't really dead, just not present at the moment. As for what she's doing, well, time for the Q and for the prophets isn't linear. She can show up at any moment and, to her, even a few years down the line, it could be one second after her disappearance.

Gone forever? Paramount/CBS refused to let PB kill her off permanently. They aren't stupid. :guffaw:

I disagree. I think they really are that stupid, but, then, I'm pretty single-minded about my Janeway love.

I heard that was in case they wanted to use Janeway in a movie, which doesn't look very likely now.

She's already been used in a movie. She was second choice. Jeri Ryan couldn't make it for Nemesis, so they asked Kate.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but how would they have used Jeri Ryan in Nemesis?

I couldn't figure that one out myself. Kate was the one who said it at a con shortly before the release of Nemesis. All I could think was, "My gawd, how the hell would a Borg fit into a film about Romulans?"

Considering Janeway has such a passionate, cult-like following (and I mean that in a nice way :)), it would appear foolish to keep her dead.

But that assumes the Janeway fans bought the books when she was alive. The Voyager novels were supposedly the least successful of the Pocket books Star Trek line and we know from prior Janeway threads that many Janeway fans don't actually have any interest in the books and just want her alive on principle.

Also Janeway's death has created more interest in Voyager books than there ever was when she was alive.

Hm...

The Borg killed Janeway.

People who didn't buy the VOY novels killed Janeway.

People who didn't buy the VOY novels = The Borg.

It all makes sense now. :)

I bought the books when she was alive. I have most of them. I wasn't all that interested in reading VOY stories about Captain Chakotay, and I especially wasn't interested in anything post-Full Circle. But I bought the homecoming ones as soon as they came out.

I agree that her death was pretty lame.

However if Kirk can stay dead after well falling off a bridge, I don't see the need for Janeway to get better treatment. I mean the Sisko is gone and Kirk is gone, then Janeway and even Archer lost his beagle(thanks to nuScotty)...

Novel wise Riker, Dax, Calhoun and Picard better watch out

That being said, I sure wouldn't NOT buy any more VOY book should they return her. I just was never a big fan of the 'Reset' Button when it comes to a Star Trek Character's death.

It gets a bit silly after a while.

Considering the nature of literature and publishers I wouldn't be too surprised if sometime in the years to come she is returned...

BOOK SPOILERS.

He came back to life in the series Shatner penned with the Garfield-Stevens writing duo. He's had quite an active "after-death" life, and I think I read more of his (Shatner's) books after Kirk died and was reborn than any other (and i'm talking hardback kiddo. I wasn't waititng around to see what happened next!).

In factI was quite taken with their version of the BORG, and despaired before "First Contact" came out that the trek PTB's wouldn't come up with something as interesting.

No Kirk, and Sisko are back in Trek novels, infact every male main character that has died has been returned in one form or another. However none of the female main characters that have died have returned.

There has been percentage wise, more female characters killed and none returned unlike any of the males who have all returned.
