One More Slow Dance...

Okay...

As I said earlier, I have been inspired by Shaw's thread where he attempted to create an accurate layout and plans for the TOS Enterprise. As I stated, I wanted to do the same thing with the TOS-era FASA Surya-Class design, because almost all fans have differing takes on what the "TOS Miranda" ought look like, inside and out, and I wanted to create a set of plans that would rationalize the design and layout in a way that makes practical and functional sense.

I am going to be following Shaw's approach, and once I'm done with the plans, I will draw up the internal spaces, starting with the bridge, and place/overlay them on top of the ship image, to try and establish a cohesive internal layout. YES, I will at times turn to the Miranda-Class plans for ideas and generalities, but the Miranda is not the Surya... it is a bigger ship, physically, just as the refit Constitution was physically bigger than the TOS version.

So, I found the one set of CLEAN Surya Plans I have... from the Ships of the Star Fleet book. I scanned them, and will use those as a basis for the external plans. However, some things will be corrected/adjusted/omitted... for instance...

The version in the Ships of the Star Fleet has some kind of grille on the warp nacelles, near the upper front, that is not present on the TOS Enterprise's nacelles, so those will be omitted. And the version in the book for some reason has TMP-era markings, so my version will have proper TOS-era markings. So, here is my first WIP... where I am now:

geminiplanswip1.gif

The book has only two views... top and side. For the bottom, I will be using Sinclair's prints of the bottom of the Enterprise's saucer as a basis for the Surya's bottom hull, adapting the Sinclair plan as best I can to the Surya's design. For the aft view, I will have to wait until Melak finishes the 3D model of the ship, and I will use that, as well as draw upon Tallguy's model for the basis of the aft view plan.

Once I'm done with the ship, I will tackle the ship's four Class-F shuttlecraft. According to The Making of Star Trek, the TOS Enterprise carries a total of six shuttles, so I will limit the Surya-Class to four.

I want to create the definitive set of Surya-Class references, that will cut through all the conflicting versions, and offer up a version of the ship that truly works. I love this class of ship, because of all the fanon TOS-era designs, I think it's the most "true" to TOS, in that its lines are elegantly simple, clean, and uncluttered. There are no useless greebles or things on it (even though the Starship Farragut people slapped an arse-ugly pod on the top of theirs, ruining the simplicity of the design). It's not overdone. As far as TOS-era fanon designs, it's really the best one out there.

This is for the Surya-Class ship from a TOS story I'm working on. Some basic stats are below:

U.S.S. Gemini - NCC-1604
Surya-Class Frigate

Construction Site: Tellar

Captain: Sam McCord

Shuttlecraft: Class-F (4)

- Castor - NCC-1604/1
- Pollux - NCC-1604/2
- Lewis - NCC-1604/3
- Clark - NCC-1604/4

I have not decided yet if my version will have a sensor dish... I will wait on that decision. Also, you may notice that I made the hull grid/panel lines quite light... that is intentional. On TOS-era ships, the hull grids and panel lines were very subtle... not as "in-your-face" obvious as TMP-era paneling. I was also very lucky, and got in contact with Cory McDaniels, who was nice enough to sell me his last TOS-era Surya-Class kit, so I will be building that up as accurately as possible, and using the model both as an assist for this project, and as a part of the project itself.

More to come soon!

Nice effort. I would mention that the Surya was not a FASA design. It was created by our own aridas sofia.

Wow, thanks, guys!

@ Tallguy: Thanks for the heads-up on the original creator... I hereby amend the FASA citation, and credit aridas sofia as the true artist. My apologies, aridas sofia, if I offended you... I truthfully did not know you were the original artist until now. Again, my apologies.

@ kkozoriz1: The Coventry IS a good ship, and there are one or two aspects of that design I prefer over the Surya, but the one thing that makes me far prefer the Surya in general, is that its hull is not as large/long as the Coventry, because the Coventry is much more like the TMP-era Miranda, in both that regard, and the way the warp pylons are attached to the hull. I am not trying to make a blatant Miranda-Class in the TOS era... I am trying to develop a true TOS-native class of ship that could have evolved into the later Miranda.

Updates later today... gonna start work on the warp nacelles today.

I like both designs. It's a big fleet. There's more than enough room for both.

I'm torn on the "deflector on a stick" style myself. I imagine that there's a fair bit of energy that can be directed through the deflector. In the TOS era (including the movies & TAS) we saw The Enterprise (original and refit), the Huron, the cargo drones, The Bonaventure and the Reliant. None of them had the dish on a stick.

Yeah, I'm kind of inclined to leave it off of this ship... I will make one, just to see how it looks, though.

Also, TOS Purist informed me that the TOS Enterprise did not have those "bubble" phaser banks on the top of the ship. So... I want to keep this ship true to TOS tech, but I also don't want to leave the topside hull unprotected, so this is what I'm gonna do... I am asking all TOS purists what they think I should do... if you feel it doesn't bother things that much, I'll leave the phasers as-is. If you want them removed, I'll omit them. So , let me know.

Anyway... a small update... began work on the warp nacelles...

Still lots to do. BTW, aridas sofia... if you're here and watching, would you by any miracle have any front/aft/bottom views of the ship I can work from?

My vote?

NO FRANZ JOSEPH NIPPLE PHASERS!!!

For one thing, they're not canon to TOS - the TOS Enterprise didn't have little phaser nipples on top of the saucer. The dome on the bottom was a dedicated "weapons pod"...and unless you've got another weapons pod on top of the saucer, you're out of luck. Although you COULD turn the ring around the bridge module into a weapons pod similar to the one on the bottom...

Second, they're too TMP-ish. And they're DEFINATELY too Franz Joseph-y, and you know my feelings on his...erm, "projects."

If your mission is to take the Surya's lines and use the detailing of the 11 foot production model, then the phasers go. Interestingly that's kind of what Todd Guenther did in Ships of the Star Fleet as well. I don't have it in front of me but he took aridas' purely Franz Joseph detailing and moved it into the TOS era. You've already taken a step with the shape of the BC deck.

Okay, thanks for that bit on info... I will remove the bubble phasers then, and the next update I post will not have them.

I'm glad Tallguy helped out there...your ship will look a LOT more authentically TOS without those dumb bubble/nipples.

Okay... I fixed the location of the little turbolift "nub" behind the bridge, and also began work on the little add-ons to the warp nacelle...

geminiplanswip6.gif

Well, frakdoodles... I honestly do not see how I missed that... in any case, I just fixed it, and it will be in the next update I post. Thanks for the heads-up.

Okay... I added some more bits to the warp nacelles, fixed the error with the turbolift nub, adjusted the position of the rectangle marking below the nub, and added the NCC number to the hull...

geminiplanswip7.gif

Okay... I think I am finished with the top view... I was not happy with the spacing/angles of the text for the NCC number, so I tightened all that up, and I added the aft running light.

You may notice I did not include a "spine" or that little fish-shaped impulse thingy that sits on the hull above the impulse power unit... this is on purpose... I figured that since this class of ship went so far as to have that "box" extension on the hull, that the impulse equipment would be contained within that space, rather than all laid out and exposed on the hull. Plus, including the fish-shaped thing would have cluttered up the hull with too much stuff, IMO.

So, unless anyone can find any genuine errors, or if there is additional stuff I may have left out, I think the top view is totally finished. Now to do the side view...
