One More Slow Dance...

Started work on the side view...

Strictly speaking, in the top view where the forward edge of the upper deck "shelf" meets the saucer should have a curve to it (as does the top of the saucer). Same will go for the side view.

Also the windows on the BC deck don't look quite right, again owing to the curvature of the structure.

Coming along nicely.

Tallguy,

Yeah... I know the bridge windows look a bit odd... for some reason, I have the hardest time getting curved windows right. I am very much considering redoing those windows, but I want to finish the side view first.

Melak did in fact make some orthos with the curve you speak of, and I will likely update both versions to show it... I am very far from done with the basics, as I'm finding out, lol.

BTW, if anyone has a reasonably large front, rear and bottom views I can work from, I'd love to see them!

Tallguy,

I decided to try the curve where the saucer meet the shelf, using Melak's orthos... this is the first pass...

Does it look right/okay to you?

The line where the aft superstructure meets the top of the saucer should not be straight, but should have a curve that follows the saucer's curve. I discovered this when I kitbashed a model of the Coventry:

The curve would definitely show in the top plan view:

I was surprised Aridas or Todd or whichever of them drew the plans in SotSF went with a straight line instead of developing the curve.

Okay, thanks... I'll redo the top view to show the curvature. It'll be trickier to figure out how to properly show it in the side view.

It surprised the hell out of me when I was building the model. I made that wall short (clear of the bottom), puttied under it, then used a straightedge to scrape the putty to the contour.

Well, here's my question, because I want this to be accurate...

In the side profile, I can assume we're supposed to be looking at the ship from the dead-on side. If that be the case, would you see the straight part that precedes the curve at all, or only the curvature, since the straight part is essentially at "eye level" with the top saucer hull?

^^ Only the curvature.

Here's a side view of my TOS Miranda 3D model as an example. Of course, the actual curve on your ship maybe be different depending on where the straight edge intercepts the saucer's curves.

Okay... a small update. I also finally included the curvature for the saucer/shelf, so let me know if it looks right.

The bottom point of that curved line should hit right where the side angles up for the "miranda shelf"...the top starting point looks correct, just "stretch" the curve down and back until it hits the angle point. Another way to think about that line, it's simply a foreshortened (horizontally-shrunk) copy of the top saucer profile-well, flipped of course:)

Looking good:)
