one FRICKING shelf

Are all your bookstores doing what the Chapters in my town has done????

Yes, at the Chapters I frequent here in London, Ontario. I was there on Thursday to pick up Full Circle (only 3 on the shelf, but the website claimed there were 9) and much to my surprise I saw the same thing you described. They had reordered a bunch of copies of the three Destiny books, A Singular Destiny, Hollow Men, both Myriad Universe TPBs, Over a Torrent Sea, and all three Terok Nor books (and probably some more I'm forgetting). There are more copies of these available now then there were when they all first came out.

And in addition to that, they also had multiple copies of Star Trek 101, Star Charts, and the Star Trek Encyclopedia!

They even had ASD, one of the MyrU titles, and the Encyclopedia on the "New and Hot Science Fiction" table. The last time I remember seeing an ST book there was..... well, I don't ever remember seeing that.

So, it was quite surprising, but it looks like the explosion of Trek books in the bookstores that Therin has been predicting has come to pass, at least up here in Canada. If you had asked me to bet on this beforehand, I probably would have put my money on the "not gonna happen" side of the table. Nice to see I was wrong. I just hope the movie actually translates into the increased book sales they seem to be hoping for.

I was hoping they'd have Twist of Faith...

As them to special order it for you, and suggest they might want spare copies for the shelves. It should still be in print.

Sounds like Chapters' managers are on the ball, or perhaps the Simon & Schuster sales rep paid the stores a few visits a few weeks ago?

I'll probably go with Amazon so it comes to my door... not sure yet...
The cover and the intro thingy by DRGIII beckon, but the fact it's huge and I have all the novels and it won't fit properly on my shelf...

I know! I'll buy a new bookcase!! :D

My guess is the former, given the out of the way place where I am.

Are all your bookstores doing what the Chapters in my town has done???? (Yes, I'm super exciteeeddd!!!)

I think it has to do with the upcoming film, but the clerk didn't know...

They've brought in an enormous pile of Star Trek novels!!! Not only new books, a bunch of copies for WoDS9 volume 2 from 2005 that I have been questing for! They had plenty of Fearful Symmetry, ASD, Hollow Men, Over a Torrent Sea, a couple These Haunted Seas, lots of the new MU books, and the Destiny and Terok Nor novels... It was like an overload! Piles of ST books!! It was great!

They're doing the same thing at the Chapters near me. The weird thing is that they restocked the shelf with about 8 copies of Vanguard - Summon the Thunder (which I have) and none of Reap the Whirlwind which came out later and I can't find anywhere. Guess I'll have to buy it used :(.

The reason for that is there was an error in the S&S database regarding Reap the Whirlwind, and it was impeding retailers' efforts to order new copies of the book. Margaret detected the error about a month ago and assures me it has since been corrected. With any luck, a new printing of RtW will be underway and shipping to retailers very soon.

Something similar happened with the novelization of the CD-ROM game novelization, "Starfleet Academy". It wasn't appearing on any international ordering systems. John Ordover found me the correct ISBN and the Australian retailers were finally able to order copies.

That is really good news. I am thoroghly enjoying the series but want to read Reap the Whirlwind before Open Secrets (as I hate reading things out of chronological sequence).

^ Believe me, that's a REALLY good idea. You do NOT want Reap The Whirlwind spoiled for you.

Will there be / was there a reprint of... Stargazer: Oblivion?
*cough*

And what gift box sets? I don't remember gift box sets!!

I wish they'd brought in more SCE... maybe it cometh!!

You mean correcting the printing errors that chopped off the printed edges of several pages on the first edition? Yes. The second printing corrected the error. I picked up a free copy of the corrected "Oblivion" bagged with a UK SF mag several years ago.

The S&S site also uploaded corrected PDFs at the time, for which Marco provided a link.

They never made it overseas. I saw several boxed sets - usually seemingly quite random titles - in US bookshops in January 1992. Usually four titles to a box.

Years ago? Okie dokie... thanks! =)

In the US... hmm... I didn't see them in Canada... sounds neat though! Could do that with Worlds...

I have seen this topic for a while but havent commented because i have not frequented the B and N thats closest to me in a while. They just recently moved from a stand alone place to being attached to the mall nearby. I went in there yesterday with the sole purpose of finally getting Full Circle. Guess what; they didnt have it. They had a total of 15 Trek books on what i figured to be 3/4 of a shelf. They had 1 copy of maybe 8 different titles and 1 or 2 copies of each of the Titan books....Thats it! But it wasnt just trek books..they didnt have the latest 2 star wars books either! Star Wars books had 5 shelves besides that! I dunno, it didnt make my day considering i went in to that store with the time and purpose of getting full circle and getting let down. Their graphic novel section went down hill too when they moved!

If you don't mind possibly annoying the employees, you could always optimize the space available for Trek books. When you see nearby books (usually Star Wars novels) that are turned to the side so you can see the cover, put it so its spine faces out, push the books out to fill the space, and turn a Star Trek book so the cover faces out. When people see the cover, they will be more likely to make that novel their impulse buy, which may help get the managers to buy more Trek books.

I was at Borders the other day, and a large, nearly flat Star Wars book was taking up a ton of poorly used space... when I left, the three Destiny books were on display in front of it (but you could still see most of the Star Wars book due to the size and shape, so no real harm done to it). I was able to turn a few Titans and Full Circle, as well.

Of course, whether or not you consider taking an advantage from other books in other series (written by just as awesome writers, I'm sure) to be honest or not is up to you, but which books get turned for display by the staff seems half random anyway.

The important question is: did you tell the staff precisely why you were leaving empty-handed. They don't know how to order unless they get feedback.

And more great news!! In addition to having 2 shelves instead of 1/2 one in the normal T section, they also have 3 or 4 shelves under a huge ST11 poster in another section!!!!! I missed it last time... but that's where they put the tons of Warpath!! So maybe other stores have ST promo sections now, or will soon. I've never seen so many in years! A lot of ones like Echoes and Refractions (Myr) and the like- piles of copies, a lot of non-fiction too- ST101, etc, and some kind of ST game. And a non-fiction book from 2008... I forget what it was called.

:D

But I don't think I've seen Mere Anarchy... isn't that a bit weird?

Man, I don't know where all you guys are, but in northern New Jersey and New York, the Borders stores have the typical half a shelf/three or four book situation that's become all too common. I despair of ever finding New Frontier: Treason in a B&M store - as Marie1 mentioned, I haven't even seen Mere Anarchy in a store yet.

Therin, i specifically told them that i came there for that book..he wanted to ship it to me for an additional 4 dollars..i told him no thank you ill get it local or on amazon. he said oh and i walked away
