one FRICKING shelf

I hope this isn't the case. Old trek and new trek are both trek, and hopefully people who like the new stuff will also appreciate what came first:(

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize the Prequel trilogy was considered popular (but it must be compared to ST Insurrection and Nemesis)

Looking at Movieweb's stats... Two of the prequel trilogy movies are in the top ten grossing films in the US. The lowest grossing Star Wars movie is The Empire Strikes Back, at 33. The highest grossing Star Trek movie is The Voyage Home, which is at 342.

The media coverage is for what I have seen described as a "reboot of the cheesy old sci-fi series". It encourages us to "forget everything you know".
I think they're playing it a little coy with the marketing. The trailers aren't exactly clear that the film is a reboot of sorts. We, as fans, know this, but for the Not-We -- which is where this film has to win -- I'm not sure that it is at all clear that the film is a reboot. I think that for a lot of people, the film is going to be the story of how it all began.

I'd say that the impression the marketing has been trying to convey is that this is a "Batman Begins" sort of situation (not a bad franchise to try and compare oneself to, by any means): it does start earlier, showing the origins of the character, but at the same time is starting something new.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Here in Greenfield, MA, we have two bookstores--one that sells new books, one used books. The new books store doesn't (normally) sell any ST (or SW) books. However, several weeks ago I found a couple of ST "hurt books" ("bargain books" at Amazon), with 5 novels within the two TPBs, at 50% off. So of course, I bought them both.

The used books store, however, has a good, and growing, ST section. When I first started to get back into ST and ST novels, a man (the owner?) was glad to see another ST fan. He said something like "Everybody brings them in, nobody buys them." Earlier this month I was in again, and not only had the ST section grown, there was now a new, second set of shelves for them. (Previously they were piling up on the floor.) Also, there seemed to be more of the newer books than before. I managed to buy all four Mission Gamma books for (Get this!) $3.50 each, plus tax. When I was at the checkout, another person who was talking to the cashier (owner?) made a comment about being glad to see that he wasn't the only person who bought ST books.

All of the previous posts in this thread almost make me feel lucky to live here. However, except for the used books store and its ST books, there isn't much here that I care for.

I'm jealous :p I wish I had a store with a good selection when I was getting back into trek-lit. The ebay stuff was decently priced, but took awhile to amass and sometimes the condition of the books wasn't as advertised. Enjoy it dude :techman::techman:

Daaaaaang it!
I guess it seems everyone else and their mother enjoyed the star wars movies.

I wasn't that impressed by them. Thought the prequel trilogy was kinda lame.

I don't know people. I've only even known about Trek books for the last two years. The Borders near me has a whole section dedicated to StarTrek at least 3 or four shelves. I couldn't believe how many Trek books are out there. However, I couldn't find all of the Voyager books I was looking for, so I had to order some of them online.

Wow, not Trek or Wars? Is this an independant shop or one of the big chains? I only ask because I'm absoulutely shocked that they don't have books from at least one of two of the biggest sci-fi franchises in history.

About 7 years ago I use to work for Barnes + Noble, and I had the good fortune to be in charge of Science Fiction and Fantasy section and I do remember at LEAST 5 shelves.

I have now visited practically every Borders and B+N in NYC and all I see is one shelf.

I recently purchased Mere Anarchy and Full Circle at a Borders, but I just purchased a boatload of older ST titles from Amazon. After $25.00 you don't pay for shipping and handling and if you buy three titles you pay for only two.

As someone else said, I hope if the movie proves to be popular we can see more than one shelf again.

Mr. Cox, if you read this, some dude was there, late 20s or so, looking through the paltry TREK section and I suggested he get the paper back versions of both your KHAN books..and he did!!! I told him they are both really books..

That's some high praise!!! Don't let it go to your head, Greg.

A little shelf? You guys actually have a shelf??!

I usually find one or two Trek books squeezed inbetween dozens of Star Wars books at most places I go to.

"Where I lived...you had to walk fifteen miles in snow 5 feet deep just to get a trek book...and not one of those fancy shiny trek books available on the inter-tubes...No, it was one of those star wars books with a stick-figure picture of captain kirk pasted to the cover...and we were grateful for it!" :scream:

It's an independent store. From comments I've heard by employees to others in the store, business has been getting slower and slower lately, primarily because of Amazon (not just the economy).

Not to go off-topic too much, but there's also an independent and a chain (FYE) music stores. The independent, which has always had a good supply of new and used music, is going out of business soon, again largely because of Amazon. (They also sell DVDs and video games, but their selection is nothing like FYE's.)

It could be worse. It could be what laughingly passes for the Stargate shelves in the local B&N. I think we've got 5 books on the shelf. Maybe. *sigh*

I fully intend to use the "Look, local author" trick on the B&N by me here just to see if it gets them to order more. Doubt it'll work, but I'll try it.

^ From experience in my area, B&N seems more receptive to that kind of thing than Borders, who only seems interested in "national authors."

(Don't ask.....)
