Anyone seen a manafacturing defect quite like this?
I was checking through all of the discs in a new boxset (a habit I've picked up after having problems with defective discs in the past) when I noticed one of them was dirty. I started cleaning it off, when I noticed the disc felt a bit thicker than usual. Suddenly the disc came apart in my hands leaving a relatively normal looking disc with a perfectly clean surface and a thin translucent layer. At first I thought they'd forgotten to glue the layers together, but the remains of the disc appeared structurally sound so I threw it into my player to see if I could get anything out of it. To my surprise it played fine on both sides of the layer change. At this point I realized they'd accidently stuck an extra layer to my disc.
Needless to say, this is one of the most bizarre defects I've ever seen (though not the first defect I've seen with Technicolor discs, about half of the discs I've seen from them have been cloudy/had fingerprints on them/ended up delaminating). Maybe these two particular layers were at the bottom of the stack in the factory and somehow got stuck together with the weight on them, would explain all the dirt and crap on the extra layer. Anyway, it'll make an interesting drinks coaster.
