Snow White and the Prince believed he could see the future, so maybe it's like a self-fulfilling prophecy (he saw what he would say and told the Queen she has to grant his requests when he says it)?
Of course, the question is if he could actually see the future. When he told Snow White what would happen and how she could save her daughter, he could have known what would happen because he gave the Evil Queen the curse. Was there any other instance where he "saw" into the future and knew something he couldn't have known otherwise?

"Emma Swan" = "I'm a Swan." I'm going with The Ugly Duckling theory, not that she's ugly, but she's going to embark on some transformative experience.
I've never thought much of her as a piece of meat, so it doesn't matter what bows and ribbons you put on her to make the girl look like a princess, she's still going to look basically the same because we know her too well after all those years on house.
Although, every one else is a finished result and we see their transformation to these complete individuals in flashback.
So, maybe, ugly duckling turns into Swan? But wouldn't her ability to break the spell be centred on the fact that she's more real than the rest of them, ergo her will to become fairy tale and give up the real world would be more powerful than anyone elses? Which would explain why "someone" made sure he had a shitty life.
Although living outside of Storybook, wouldn't she have mostly escaped these metaphors?

Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, but that's the story of Rumpelstiltskin.
Well, fortunately you've picked the right show this time (that's not a snark - I've been burned so many times that OUAT is literally the only network show I'm bothering to watch this year). The show is a bona fide hit, appears to be pushing both the Lost and Desperate Housewives buttons (the latter because people are actively looking for a replacement; same goes for Lost, too, now I think of it), and it's getting major league ratings. And last I heard it's in the NCIS "sure thing" category for renewal for a second season.
Of course we've been down this road before with a little thing called Heroes. In other words the first year might be fantastic and then the audience may abandon it in year 2. But for now I wouldn't be worried about the show being "doomed". Barring a collapse in its ratings after the midseason break, I don't think it's going anywhere just yet.

Once Upon a time ticks all the genre boxes, for what we are "supposed" to like, if we take a step back, it's really not the best TV in the world.

She's spent 30 years as hero and leader of these people and she likes it.
After being the hero for that long, being loved and celebrated for her benevolence and altruism, like fuck going back to being shat on as the villain!
Regina is a woman of the people, not some hag in a hovel on the outskirts fending off plots of destruction now and then...

I'm actually really enjoying this show, which is surprising. I watched the first episode just out of curiosity expecting it to be awful but its won me over. Still feels a little like a guilty pleasure but I love the mystery aspect of it, trying to work out who people really are and how their stories fit together. Sure its cheesy but I'm not adverse to a little bit of cheese now and then and I think the people making it know that its cheesy which makes all the difference sometimes.
