On the good ship Lollipop

Captain Zog

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
In "Arsenal of Freedom", Riker claims to have served aboard the Starship Lollipop - but later episodes only make reference to his service aboard the Hood and the Pegasus (although others may be mentioned). I remember reading an article by Manny Coto stating that the Lollipop participated in the final assault on Cardassia during the Dominion War, but I don't know what class this ship belonged to. Does anyone have any details about the Lollipop. Pics would be welcome.

Okay, I did some pre-viz. That's what it looked like ... :D

Riker was making a reference to a bubblegum pop song popularized in the late 1950s. He made this ship up to test "Rice" to see if he was real -Riker also claims to be currently on this ship and that its armament and crew are "12 and 5." Manny Cotto was just taking the piss/joking on his claims.

I've thrown away my toys,
Even my drums and trains,
I want to make some noise,
with real live airplanes.
Some day I'm going to fly,
I'll be a pilot too,
and when I do,
how would you,
like to be my crew?

On the good ship
lollipop
its a sweet trip
to the candy shop
where bon-bon's play,
on the sunny beach
of peppermint bay
Lemonade stands,
everywhere
crackerjack bands,
fill the air,
and there you are,
happy landings on a chocolate bar.
See the sugar bowl
do a tootsie roll
in a big bad devils food cake,
if you eat too much,
oh, oh,
you'll awake,
with a tummy ache.

On the good ship
lollipop
its a nice trip,
in to bed you hop,
and dream away,
on the good ship
lollipop

Someone needs to make a music video to this!

All more or less correct, except that bubblegum pop was a 60s confection and that the song in question was a signature tune for Shirley Temple, first appearing in a movie in 1934. I think "12" and "5" may be a little off, too.

I think Riker also makes reference to it being a really "sweet ship." Which was a hoot!

But yes, it was Shirley Temple who popularized this little ditty, although it's been recorded since. For some reason.

Eh, I did a rough google with it and came up with a hit for some 1950s version.

Didn't make sense to me but I went with it.

It's a crap song anyway.

The exchange went like this. It was after Riker had figured out Rice wasn't really Rice and was testing him. Using "lollipop" and "its a good ship" were great. I remember the song from Saturday afternoon movies on tv when I was little.

RICE
Tell me about your ship -- the
Enterprise, isn't it?

RIKER
No... The name of my ship is the
Lollipop.

RICE
I have no knowledge of that ship.

RIKER
It's just been commissioned. It's
a good ship.

Ah, yes, that's right. It was that "good ship" part that cracked me up - and it still cracks me up now. I missed it the first time I saw that episode.
