OMG first shot of the new bridge!!!

I'm annoyed that any and all discussions of the film have degenerated into bitch fests about how Trek needs to "change."

Not all change is great, and some changes are better than others.

^Sadly, until we get an actual film to review, I don't know what else people are going to talk about.

It's why I've been trying to avoid the majority of threads on the new movie.

Well, when you start a thread about how a few stills have killed your desire to see a highly anticipated movie, you've got to expect to ruffle a few feather among those who're still being optimistic, or at least not making snap decisions.

Like I said before, I love the uniforms but the set well I am not fond of! At a glance the new uniforms are most certainly Star Trek! The Bridge set, however you look at it, it is not "Star trek"! At a glance you should be able to say that is the Enterprise Bridge. It should be updated like their uniforms are but indeed Star trek! In another words, one sees the new actors in their costumes and sees Star Trek! That should happen with the sets for the film too!

It'd be nice if that hasn't been the case for the past few months, though.

Nope. Deal me out, I ain't playin'
Don't be a stickler. This was the Enterprise when she was first launched -

Are we talking the same Enterprise? The one launched in 2245, when Kirk was thirteen years old?

There's a difference between being open minded and empty minded.

There's a scene with Kirk's parents & older brother..i believe mom will be pregnant with James. So that building of the Enterprise would fit in fine with it being build before Kirk was even an adult....it might also be a reit scene.

And for those not liking the bridge (i want to see it in acion first)...who wants to bet that the bridge will in deed be blown up, opening the door to change it closer to the original if needed.

Yeah, they're gonna blow up the bridge and put the ship into a huge garbage compactor in order to refit it all into the original ship.

Yeah. Right.

And I've got a moon you can buy real cheap.

I wish the uniforms were a little more form-fitting. They're just kind of hanging off of everybody.

The fit is slightly off, probably due to the fabric they're using. My bigger issue is with the saturation of color on them. It looks alright on the red and gold, but the blue is distractingly rich and dark. Here's hoping we get some gray jackets thrown over em at some point. ;)

Some of you people need to think out of the box....EVERY other SF space movie WANTS to look like Alien/Event Horizon/Supernova, etc....why shouldn't the new Enterprise look like a starship instead of a friggin garbage scow?

RAMA

Please come over to Trek XI. There's a topic over there that needs half a brain.

How appropriate.

"Open minded" versus "empty minded" has nothing to do with this topic, which revolves entirely around questions of taste and preference. Those of us looking forward to the movie certainly can't do anything about the fact that some people are frustrated enough about it to suggest that those whom they cannot convince to agree with them are "empty minded" - that is, stupid - but in instances like this we can consider the source.

My only disappointment is that the powers-that-be hadn't found a way to make the original bridge look good on the big screen with just the tweaks necessary to make it look modern. But to be fair, I'm not sure that's even possible. I love the original bridge, but ... a main viewer with the aspect ratio of a 1960's color television? Slideshows on the workstation overhead displays (at best)? One turbo-lift? Clunky toggle and rocker switches and rotary digital displays and jelly-bean indicator lights?

None of that makes sense for a view of the future today. It'd have to be changed to avoid the new movie becoming a joke to the average movie-goer, and frankly, I think it'd be a joke to modern, rational fans too.

The viewer needs to be at least 16:9, preferably wider, and possibly ringed with other displays. The clunky '60s tech needs to be upgraded, but I'm not convinced a flat, touch-sensitive console is the way to go ... that little TNG innovation has always bothered me as a touch-typist. Still, it's iconographic of a futuristic interface. The slideshows should be replaced by interactive, animated displays. Instead of being built from painted wood, I'd expect the bridge to look like it's made from metals and plastics and maybe ceramics with more curves and the suggestion that the materials used have properties unmatched by stuff used today. So I'd probably make each workstation smoothly curved instead of angular as it was originally.

When I'm done, is my bridge any worse than Abrams' at conveying the tone of the orignal after an update?

I love Abrams' revised captain's chair. That nailed the design ethos I was hoping for. I like his overhead displays, although I'm not sure about the manner in which information is presented. I don't like the spotlights that point out at people instead of surfaces. And the podium must go. It sure looks too bright on the new bridge, but I don't want it dark, either.

The one thing almost everyone is forgetting is that the picture of the bridge is from a still camera. So the bright lights and really shinny will come thru. No one has seen the bridge how it will be color graded in film. Look at the first teaser, it was much darker. So I have a feeling that much of the 'Brightness' will be gone in the final product.

^Except for the fact that it's not a "still picture" but a frame from the movie.

Wait ... do we know this? A lot of films have still photographers on hand for publicity purposes and to document production.

Actually, we don't. We know that it's a scene from the film, but it's not necessarily a frame from the shoot.

The only think which suggests that it may be, is Spock in motion in the foreground. The other characters look pretty carefully posed.

My GAWD! We have photos and there's still plenty of wiggle room! Why in the HELL can't we pin these details down now so we can get the boycott organized properly and all?!

CHOP CHOP, PEOPLE!

I'm more concerned about how the crew looks than the bridge, and they look fine to me... the bridge does seems a tad bright but it's not beyond what I was expecting for a "semi-reboot" design.

..and if folks like CRA are not going to go see it because they don't like the bridge, that's up to them. No offense CRA, but you weren't JJ's target audience anyhow. [you'll probably take that as the highest praise imaginable! :p ] Personally I'm more concerned about what the exterior of the ship looks like than the interior...
