Luckily these days i prefer getting a movie from the library for free, making something groovy to eat (or spring for take-out) and watching the movie from the couch in my jammies.

Yeah, date night nowadays is expensive if you actually go out!

When the hell did this happen? I remember when I was 17 I'd take a girl out on a date I'd spend like 25-30 bucks and we'd have a blast. Tonight I took my wife out for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and blew $100 like it was nothing!

Yep. My husband works evenings and I work some half-days, so our "dates" are lunchtime meals at our local pub with one drink each. It can cost less than £20, which is a bargain. On the other hand the last time we took the 3 kids bowling and went out for a meal afterwards it cost over £100. Small wonder we tend to stick to walks along the riverside and nachos and ice cream in front of a rented movie.

Our Date nights tend to be more like date afternoons cause we're both cheapskates. Then again our date nights also include a stop at the grocery or retail store to pick up some supplies we need like toilet paper.

My husband and I are just so romantic like that.

Oh I hear you. I get taken out my Man Sunday afternoons after the trip to Sainsburys, and with shopping in tow, we stop off for a couple of £1.60 pints at the local cheap 'chain' pub. Occasionally though I do get treated to the Sunday lunch ~ which comes with a free drink at £5.99
Wo betide if I forget to take that day's crossword or we'd have to talk to each other!

As for date nights ~ it doesn't have to be expensive, a picnic in the park is romantic.

Date nights don't have to be expensive, though we enjoy a nice evening out sometimes. If we're talking restaurants, drinks are always going to make it much more costly and since we don't really drink much, it's not an issue.

I respectfully disagree, sir.

I'm enrolled in an MBA program on my own dime (refuse to take out a loan) and my wife and I have both had major car fixes so far this year. And spaying the dog, and new camping gear, etc...in other words, discretionary income is low at this point.

We sometimes plan a good rogering into our weekends because it's free. We like to make our own entertainment.

If two of us were to go for average (nothing fancy) drinks, dinner, and a movie in my neck of the woods, the minimum expense would probably be £80 (about $160). You Americans have it much easier, really, so stop complaining, it can be much much worse!

Again, in 9 years together, we've seen in the theaters:

Memento (like a week after we started dating)
Ice Age 2
Star Wars Episode III (she humored me on this one)
and Avatar twice in IMAX 3D. Because the local furniture shop has an IMAX theater in it with seats that move with the action. I don't get it, I just enjoy the show.

Before this economic crisis hit, I remember you could get very nice exchange rates when changing from pound to euro... if I remember correctly, approaching about a third extra on top. That was fun! A night out in Italy seemed quite reasonable at that time. All that has gone out of the window now. Good for you Italians when visiting the UK though!

The most expensive date night I went on was $50 for dinner and a few drinks. Most of our date nights now consist of one of us cooking dinner and getting drunk on $15 bottle of wine.

Tonight we are ordering sushi and watching Chuck... around $20 a person.

You wonder how people who go out every night afford it? The answer is they don't. I have friends who are in massive debt just from going out drinking every week.

My boyfriend and I are both cheapskates and rarely spend money on "extras," but one thing we always budget into our entertainment expenses is going out for dinner, because we really enjoy it. But we usually never order drinks or appetizers, and always order our entrees with price in mind (it really does taste better if I know it costs less!!), so it never comes out to too much. When I was a kid we never went out to eat at restaurants because there were too many children and it would have been too expensive. So I guess that's why I really love going out to eat now.

A good idea is to go out to breakfast instead of dinner, as it is so much cheaper. We go to IHOP every now and then and only spend about $15 for the both of us! I order a big breakfast that we share from, and he orders a side dish of biscuits and gravy for himself.

We never go to the movies though, we can't really afford that. Someday!!

Breakfast is always nice. Yesterday morning I was in the mood for some breakfast (which is rare), I found a cool little diner on Yelp and we had a very nice morning. ~$20 when all was said and done and I ordered some juice.

Fuck paying for drinks while you are out. I was able to get trashed last night with Vanilla Coke and Bourbon and all it cost me was ~$3 in supplies. I would have paid $18 at a bar. The only alcohol I will buy is a glass of wine with dinner because it can really enhance the meal. If I want to get trashed, I can do that on my own, thank-you-very-much.
