Oliver Stone and Michael Douglas return for "Wall Street 2"

Jumping onto the subject of our current economic turmoil and financial meltdowns, Gordon Gecko is coming back for "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps."

Supposedly the film will take place 20 years after the original right before the economic collapse where Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas) is released from prison and tries to warn everyone about the impending crash but no one will believe him.

Shia LaBeouf has the Charlie Sheen role this time around as the young Wall Street trader. Rumor has it his character will be married to Gecko's estranged daughter.

Josh Brolin, Susan Sarandon, Frank Langella and Charlie Sheen co-star.

Thoughts? Opinions? Of all the sequels that will continue to get made, did anyone expect Wall Street 2?
 
I don't really see the need for this to be a sequel. just make it a new film.

besides the fact that this kind of film ressurrection is often iffy at best, It's not like there's some sort of Wall Street brand that's going to bring in tons of moviegoers. It's not Star Wars.

I have never ever heard of the first one.

However they make a lot of useless sequels that aren't needed, like Tron.
 
I saw Wall Street for the first time less than a year ago and was happy to hear about this sequel soon after. Good to hear that Charlie Sheen will be back too. I didn't know he would be. Digging around, it looks like he'll only make a cameo appearance though. And Shia LaBeouf seems like the perfect choice for a high-strung, fast talking Wall Street type. I'm looking forward to this.
 
If he has something to say, and it doesn't come across as forced or somehow artificial, I don't mind if a crazy auteur like Stone revisits his characters. I kind of wish more directors did it with their more relevant characters.
 
I don't know if the sequel can recapture that yuppie feeling again from the 80's

Wall Street is a great film. Gekko's iconic speech on greed is seared into my memory and the overall movie hangs together pretty well. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the sequel brings. Like Samurai upthread, I don't know if the atmosphere will match the 80s yuppie vibe, but if storyline extends into the credit crunch, and if they can capture some of the sheer financial chaos & panic that accompanied Lehman's collapse last year, then it could be a worthy successor.

Anyway, I'm interested.

Where did you read that? I heard that he was out of the new film. Which makes a little bit of story sense, since Gekko will be the center of Money Never Sleeps. But I'll take a cameo if the news is true.

I'm hoping this will be a bit of a comeback for Stone, who hasn't made a great film since Nixon in 1995. I'd consider Any Given Sunday and Alexander ambitious, but ultimately bloated films teeming with excess. World Trade Center was far too unambitious for the director. W. was good, but not great.

And to be fair, I haven't seen U-Turn or his documentary work that he's done off and on during the past ten years, but they're hard to come by on DVD (if not outright impossible).
 
^ Oliver Stone said Sheen was coming back. But since he's got Two and a Half Men, he won't have time to film a big role.

It's set in 2007-2008, as I understand, with Gecko warning everybody about the impending collapse at the start of the movie.

A sequel set in this period is an interesting idea, and I'm definitely interested to see Douglas reprise his best role. Though the music in the teaser seems a bit wrong for the material.
 
Wall St. the first time around was awesome and provocative. Too bad kids of that era who heard "greed is good" took it literally. D'oh!

Which brings us to today and a very relevant Wall St. II.

I'll be watching.

Couldn't care less about Charlie Sheen. He is completely irrelevant in everything he's done post Wall St. Don't know how such an unfunny, plebeian show like Two and a half Men could be such a hit.

Ah well, such is art....or commerce

Well, that guarantees I won't be seeing this movie unless it comes on cable one night and nothing else is on.

The Beef: Why didn't we listen... arggh... I'ma gonna jump out a building now. Comin' Gordon?

Gecko: Nah, I'm good. I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance.
 
It looks pretty good, the orginal had a bit of magic to it...not sure this one will have it though.
 
Hard to say from this trailer, which is slick, but doesn't give away much plot information. Still, I rather liked W. and think that it's about time Oliver Stone got back on track.

Gecko: Plus I spent a lot of money producing a show about Cavemen, it became massive hit! I'll be rowing in the money for years!
 
I will be seeing this movie (I loved the first one).

Nice to see the return of the mobile phone.
