Oldtimers, do you feel it?

Any of you oldtimers out there beginning to feel it? :cardie:

Forty plus years of Star Trek and I'm beginning to forget it all. I find myself having to go to websites to refer to episode names and characters and stuff like that in order to hold a conversation on this BBS.

Not too long ago I would've whipped it off the top of my head.

Is it canon overload or senility finally setting in????

I'm in that group, but hell the way I look at it is, if I forget a certain programme or some bits I treat as if I've never seen it before so everythings a surprise!!!!

Well when I was first getting into fandom, we only had 78 episodes and the Animated Series to worry about - oh yeah, and Spock Must Die!

With five series (and accompanying novel series) plus eleven movies, yes, I have to rely on "outside help" when it comes to remembering things!

What's really freaky is that when TOS started, colour TV's were still a novelty, and there were no VCR's or DVD's (except the mild filrtation with laser disc in the 70's and the discs were as big as the albums), infact all the futuristic stuff was on shows like Star Trek.

Even though I was born in 1973, when I became a Trek fan in the 80s I could somehow tell you all the airdates and the production number of most of TOS. Like even now I recall that The Trouble with Tribbles aired on December 28th 1967 and was episode 33....I think.
TNG I can remember the episode from the title, and maybe what I was doing that day/week that it was on.
DS9 I adore, but because it went in for long story arcs it's harder to distinguish single episodes.
VOY I never cared for and ENT I missed alot of living here in Taiwan.

I started feeling that years ago. I can distinguish most TOS, STNG and DS9 episodes from a few seconds, and remember most of the plot details, etc. After that it becomes harder.

IMO, not being able to remember every bit of Trek trivia that you used to isn't really a sign of being old, but perhaps of having more a life outside of Trek than you used to (for example, it may be more important to balance your checkbook today than what episode McCoy lost his communicator in).

Well, I only ever worried about committing TOS-related info to memory. For the rest, there's Memory Alpha and other websites :techman:

Totally relate to this. I don't talk about Trek as much these days or join in the conversations because I can't remember half the point I would have made once or it's an effort to do the research first!

Also, I've noticed that comments are made about things, sometimes in the TNG forum for example, about the way things were back in the day and I find that not to be my experience at all. It's like over the years history is being re-written. I find it odd and a little disturbing.

Both. I just had to look up the Scalosians to answer a warp question. I used to know "Scalosians".

BTW, we are in orbit around Gamma Hydra V, right?

(On a side not, I just had to look that up for the joke. *sigh*)

TOS (which I grew up with in reruns) and TNG, no problem. The later stuff, yeah it's not sticking like it used to.

I'm only 38 and I most definitely feel it! I don't have the quick recall like I did when I was younger, but as already mentioned, there are a lot more things in my memory and on my mind these days and unfortunately much of it is garbage that I wish I could forget!

I'm pretty much a TOS and (casual) TNG fan and I don't follow the other shows--never even seen Voyager--but much of my memory is still in a perpetual fog; and not just for Trek, but for other interests, too.

Weird, i have no problem with long term memory (and ST fits in there for me)...its short term memory i have completely lost. I couldn't tell you what i had for breakfast yesterday but i can tell you all about a TOS episode (for the most part).

I keep my brain cells fresh & active by arguing over alternate timelines vs alternate realities and who's hotter, Pine or Quinto. :D

I had to look it up to understand it! :D Stop that!

Well duh

I don't watch much tv let alone TNG/DS9/VOY and I'm busy with my life- school andmy fiancée.

Yeah, I used to be big on the Trek details until Voyager came around. Then I realized not only was the new stuff not sticking, but the old stuff was slipping away as well.

But on the plus side, now that there's no new Trek on TV I've started rewatching the old shows, and not being able to remember everything that's going to happen next has been rather nice.

Kind of :)

But I started watching Trek in the 80's when re-runs were on Nickelodeon. Then when TNG came out I watched Star Trek more. The first Trek film I saw in the theatre was Star Trek VI, then Generations, First Contact, Nemesis, and Star Trek. I skipped Insurrection for the old "odd/even rule of thumb of Trek films" I figured the film wouldn't be worth my time.

For those who watched TOS back in the 60's did any of you think there would be a lot of arguments about canon like there is today?

I was still young when TNG premiered (28) but I never memorized episode names of newer Trek like I did TOS. That was partly because I got more of a life and partly because of the sheer volume of new episodes. TNG + DS9 + VOY = 21 seasons compared to 3 from TOS. It's no surprise we lose track.
