Old school starship design vs....

Just curious...I know a lot of the older fans like the style of ship from pre-STIV era...especially disliking the post-Voyager era...what do they think of of the semi-official USS Aventine? I can almost see where some of the criticism comes from for ships like the E-E, but the Aventine just blew my socks off..is there any love for this class in TOS fandom?

Sorry. Just another over-thought and over-detailed 24th century ship. It always seemed to me that designs should get 'cleaner' looking as they evolve. The Enterprise - D is a perfect example of this when compared to her predecessors. YMMV.

Too over-designed. It looks like the Enterprise-E as interpreted by Syd Mead.

I don't like it either. But, where's it from? It looks similar to the 1701E, but not quite.

Add me as another "no" vote. Most 24th Century Starships got way too flat-looking for my tastes. They lost the beauty & interesting angles of the Enterprise profile. Frankly, Voyager always looked like a garden spade to me.

Don't like it either. It's like people have forgot what flowing lines mean. Ships tend to look totally deformed nowadays, like they have been in a car crash or melted in the sun or something, they are totally unbalanced. And thanks to John Eaves, they are so overly detailed, with lots of hull plates, and giant black areas everywhere.

I don't like it.

But I do like the Titan.

Me too.

I think the Enterprise E and this Aventine are just trying too hard to look flowy and artsy, if you know what I mean.

I loved the ship designs that the FASA role-playing game had. They had little miniatures of most of them too. They were all basically variants of the hull and nacelle design of the refit Connie.

That's an awesome shot of the Aventine, where's it from?

I'm a big fan of that design, although I don't qualify as an older fan I guess ;)

Its the latest image from the Star Trek magazine. There is a centerfold of it in the magazine!!!

Too over-designed. It looks like the Enterprise-E as interpreted by Syd Mead.

What a compliment! I love Syd Mead. I think the ship looks extremely functional.

What is the third ship? I like that one.

Early version of the Aventine.

It seems to me that as starship designs have become sleeker and more detailed, they tend to also look more aggressive, which I'm not sure jives with the spirit of Star Trek.

I'm in agreement that the Enterprise D was a fantastic progression...the interiors even moreso. Newer designs, like this ship or the Sovereign class, are certainly well-designed, but to me they don't feel quite right for Star Trek. I did think the Intrepid class design carried the torch quite well, though.
