Old school starship design vs....

It would make a good Enterprise-F, but good is in the mind of the beholder.

I think it's a nice looking design.

That pic of the Aventine looks like the ugly offspring between an Intrepid class and a Sovereign class, and I don't care for those two classes much, either.
So ehhh...

Ya know, I didn't recognize any of those pics, till I got home and looked up at the Ships of the Line calendar, appropriately open to the October page. There's the 2nd image - the Aventine. I guess I haven't paid too much attention to this year's calendar.

Doug

First 2 are images of the Aventine (Vesta class)

Second image is the U.S.S. Spirit (Spirit class/Nx-79995) A way smaller testbed for quantum slipstream.

In universe: As quantum slipstream in this era isnt possible on larger profiled ships, it would probably require a couple of years, before any shape would be QSD capable. This means that for example an E-F might very well be a "tall ship" again. (with a more classic layout.)

If it where up to me I would design an extremely clean ship, with hardly any outer details. (But then in a Star Trek style ofcourse.)

While I would like to try such an experiment, it would mean a very large departure from anything we saw the last 15 years or so.

The old-school ships were designed by people who actually BUILT things. They looked REAL because the WERE real objects reflecting REAL light onto REAL film.

The new ships are designed by people who sit at computers who generally have no interest or experience in how objects are actually put together. I think that explains why they look absurd.

I was about to reply to this, but I gave up. I guess some of us Trekkies just are very conservative if it comes to the definition of Science Fiction and/or Spaceship. :)

Frankly, Voyager always looked like a garden spade to me.

Oddly enough, I always thought that from the front, Voyager looked like a squat lamp, from the side like a duck, and from the top like a penis. (T)Raumschiff does this one even further by actually building the Surprize model in the shape of a penis and testicles, with Voyager's design clearly being an influence. I could post a picture, but I think I might get in trouble.;)

That's a good way to describe it. I don't like the Intrepid class much either.
I thought it looked like a baby's spoon.

What is (T)Raumschif?

That's a good point. A digital model doesn't need to be stable enough to withstand gravity, for instance. So they tend to look pretty fragile and have impossible configurations.

What is (T)Raumschif

(T)Raumschiff is a German parody of Star Trek where the three principle Kirk, Spock, and McCoy characters are all gay. I've only ever seen clips on Youtube from it, but it has insanely high production values for just being a parody.

The first clip is when we first see their ship, the Surprize. The establishing shot shows the ship from the side, where it looks extremely similar to Voyager, but when it turns to the bird's-eye view, you see that the saucer and secondary hull form what looks like the head and shaft of a penis, while the nacelles looks like testicles. I have pics of the model somewhere I can post if I don't get in too much trouble...
