These things are like a genre all to themselves.

Who here remembers Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, and Dungeon Hack?

Does anyone still make games like these?

Good times, good times.

Dungeon Master is one of the greats. It has one of the best magic systems to date.

I still have a blast playing Might & Magic: World of Xeen on DOSBox.

Just looked it up. Awesome! That's exactly what I'm talking about!

One game that is in a similar vein but was done with better technology is ShadowCaster. The engine was written by John Carmack, and is somewhere between Wolfenstein and Doom in terms of technology.

Betrayal at Krondor. :techman:

First CRPG I ever played, and really my introduction to RPG's and the fantasy genre in general. The game made me really want to learn more about the world and characters, so I picked up Magician: Apprentice soon after and was hooked. Was mainly into graphic adventures before that (Lucasarts, Sierra) so while I had to get used to things like stats, combat, etc., BaK managed to incorporate the two genres well with its interactive novel style. Think I started playing the Quest for Glory series not long after that as well (oh and Ultima 7), which also helped to gently ease me into RPG's. Still one of my all-time favorite CRPG's!

You know, I could just never get into Krondor for some reason. I'm not sure why. It just didn't engage me right away. And I didn't stick with it long enough to find out about the "Betrayal" part.

If you want to play it, the download is free and legal at Abandonia. :techman:

Oh, and emulation actually works better with VDMSound than DOSBox.

OMG. ShadowCaster. I had completely forgotten that game until I saw this. So many happily wasted hours. :D

Actually, you can't download it from Abandonia. You have to buy it. However, they link to a $10 6-pack from gog.com, which I am quite tempted to purchase...

Guh???

*checks*

You're right, but that's new. I downloaded free from Abandonia less than six months ago.

Well, they do try to keep up on things like that! I imagine they don't want to get legal notices.
I thought the whole idea of Abandonware was that the companies are no longer collecting money on that particular software, making it all nice and legal.

Legally, there is no concept of "abandonware."

However, if no one is currently selling new copies of the title in question, and has not done so for several years, it is commonly accepted that you can consider it "abandoned" and offer it for download.

In this case, someone is indeed selling the games in question, so I suspect the Abandonia folks don't want to invoke the ire of the rights-holders. Offering free downloads cannibalizes sales, or at least has the potential to do so. Besides, $10 for 6 M&M games is a steal!

There are also the games that are protected by the ESA, many of which are no longer sold by anyone, but apparently the ESA doesn't give a shit about that.
