Old-School "Face in Space" Titles Returning!

RTDs went as far as to make one of his main characters a Doctor Who fan, and then give him a K9, me thinks RTDs is going to miss writing Doctor Who.

In fairness in season 4 of Coupling Moffat made one of his characters a sci-fi shopw owner who talked to a dalek in his shop and ran around with a Bring back Dr Who jumper on at one point...he then ensured he scored with an extremely hot woman! He also had Jack Davenport hiding behind a sofa at one point...

Don't wanna get into the classic/new debate...nah who am I kidding of course I do. For all its budget there are times when new Who is nowhere near as clever as the classic series was. The classic series could be very dark on occasion, trouble is that even at its best most eps were stuck with sub par effects. so even something as great (and as adult) as Weng Chaing featured a very bad giant rat! I still maintain, there are classic episodes in both eras (well every era since there's more than 2)

they are both as bad as each other, and thank god the K9 loving character from QAF never meet this guy you mention from Coupling.

It's a fun idea, I'll admit. And I'm sure I'll warm up to it, but we've just had four series with this one, and it's still fresh and a lot of people still like it.

To me though, it seems too cheesy and too much like the original Doctor Who (which I didn't really like if I'm honest).

Wow, the one they had for McCoy's opening looked classic 80's. After viewing some of the ones with the faces, (Through Youtube), I think I prefer the ones they have now. Hopefully they don't change.

It's also exactly why I don't want action shots. Doctor Who has always had a simple, eerie and short title sequence - those bits take me right out of it.

actually that action sequence credit point on thing out, it works for 5 characters (didnt count but I think its 5) but when there are only two characters, I dont think its going to work, I think credits in that style need 4 of more characters.

but I really like how they manage to include the vortex whilst also showing the action shots, the YouTuber has gone a very good job with the idea.

I think the face in space worked best with Tom Baker and the time tunnel effect. Baker had that creepy stare that worked out (His starfield sequence wasn't half as good). Compared to that, Davison's look was bland, Colin had the stupid smile and McCoy had the wink, although McCoy does look creepy for a minute before the wink.


Troughton and Pertwee's titles were kind of bland too.

Trout's were awesome. I love the howlaround effects of the first three title sequences, but his are the most effective, with the creepy, tearing effect after his face looms out of the electronic haze, along with the best version of the theme. I still get shivers seeing it.

BTW it's not fair to criticize the classic series on the basis of the Kandyman. "Happiness Patrol" is from an era (1984-1989) that even hardcore fans of original series Doctor Who have had trouble enjoying. Although honestly, even Happiness Patrol has that brillaint scene where the Doctor confronts that guy. "Like taking life".


I wonder if Sci has only seen original Doctor who from the 80s, maybe that's why he hates it.

Speak for yourself, chief. I enjoy the 1980s quite a bit. I'm a big fan of The Happiness Patrol. And the Kandyman is fab.

Well, it has done better in retrospect, I suppose, and the Doctors have certainly done well in Big Finish.

No, he just blindly hates anything Doctor Who before 2005.

I think it's amusing that Sci's low opinion of the classic series is consistently treated as shocking and in need of an explanation of how it doesn't really count, as though it isn't the same basic reaction most 21st-century viewers, including many faithful fans of the new series, would have. Old television is almost always the province of a niche audience.

And I find it more amusing that somehow their opinion should be seen as more valid than the "niche" audience that stuck with the series in the first place, deriding the old which lasted for 27 years and faililng to acknowledge the great deal of things each shares with the other because it's "cheesy" and "old".

Who said anything about validity or acknowledging shared details? As usual when popularity comes up, arguments are being debunked that no one made. But for the record: both opinions are equally valid, and obviously the two series have a lot of shared elements. That doesn't change the fact that Sci's opinion is not nearly so bizarre as reactions to it would suggest, which is all I said in the first place.

Which doesn't make him, or those others, correct at all. What I object to is when opinons such as those are presented as hard fact rather than opinion.
