old school anime, its not the same as i remember!

My son has always been a fan of the stuff like Dragonball-Z etc.

i always used to tell him, you know one of these days when you're old enough i'll show you where all that stuff came from.

well, since last month he's officially a teenager, and finally called me on my bluff... so i dug out my old tapes.

i started him out tonite on Akira. he just loved it! he couldnt belive it was older than he is.

i really do remember some of these being much more racy. or maybe i've just been desensatized?

some of my favorites were the already mentioned akira, Fist of the Northstar, the Guyver.

is it just me, or have the times and media changed so much that what used to be taboo just isnt that bad anymore?

Ehhh, want good anime, watch the original Japanese with subtitles....American studios, for some reason, think anything animated MUST have silly sounding voices.

Taboos mean nothing....in the 80's and the early 90's, you had to be a close wrestling fan....but come the mid 90's when the WCW/n.W.o. happened, one could enjoy it without being laughed at for the most part.

Times have definitely changed. I also remember Akira and the like being more extreme but compared to most modern stuff its pretty tame. BTW, if you have a blu-ray player you may want to consider picking up the akira blu-ray. Dear lord...... *drool*

Movies, tv, songs, Everything changes. Plus the fact that our tastes have matured a lot over the years.

Kinda reminds me of the car rental scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I remember I used to laugh myself sick over that bit with all the 'F' words. Now I barely crack a smile.

I remember watching Akira a few years back... didn't impress me very much and was kinda dragging on near the end.

I however always liked Robotech, Jungle Book with the boomerang, Astroboy, Ninja Scroll was pretty good, as was Ghost in the Shell, but it's been a while since I saw any anime that was worth my time.

I recently rewatched Wings Of Hone... Honyo... Homey... Oh, you know. There was some nudity and "sexual situations" I'd forgotten about. I guess when anime became more popular and mainstream they toned the raciness down for the mass market.

Then again, there's Moonlight Mile, whose main character screws anything with breasts fairly graphicly. And 009-1 has a lot of cartoony nudity.

Watched Ghost in the Shell recently over Netflix and yeah that was pretty good Anime, although the opening scene has Kusangi's bare boobs... of course she's a cyborg or something, so is it really "boobs" to be worried about? I mean in some ways if its a robot that's totally naked, is it really nudity or is it just an undressed mannequin?

Graphic violence, a bit o' nudity... shitty voices... lol... everything I'd expect out of mid 90s anime.

In anime, nowadays, you can definitely get away with a whole lot more as far as what content you can show. Then again, like television here, it depends on what channel airs it and what time it's on.

And "Space Battleship Yamato" (Star Blazers). Going back even further, "Astro Boy" and "Kimba the White Lion" were part of my after-school viewing in the 1960's.

Yeah, compare Iria which was pretty edgy for 90's OVA series to something more current like Mnemosyne and there's a difference. I'm really surprised that managed to get brought over here too seeing as how violent and disturbing it is, though it had a decent story too.

I only listed what I've seen, can't be helped. On the subject though I did forget to mention 3X3 Eyes. The rest of the anime list that went unlisted, barring further errors, is post 1997, and well.....considerably larger mostly thanks to employment and the internet.

Also I once considered several of those titles as new to me, but then more than 10 years passed and they became not-so-new and dated as I went on to other shows. Progress: It is the way of things, sadly.
