Old Fans, their fears.

As for the "my old Trek was scrapped, erased and replaced for the new Trek by soulless Hollywood" bullshit.... I don't even want to start commenting on it anymore.

Even though I liked the movie I can completely see where people are coming from when they say the nuTrek has no soul...because it didn't.

You all have to understand people (some fans) have high standards when it comes to Trek...especially TOS and we expect a lot out of it...and I know that we are expecting too much of it for the the new millenia...I don't feel that they will do a story that satifies our mind, heart and soul.....we're just in for "fun rides" from here on out.

I'm sorry but as I said in the previous post...bullshit :p

Of course,as everything else, the movie is not perfect but there are hundreds of posts in this very forum and hundreds of threads were people analyze and comment on how in addition to having fun they have found both heart and soul. How it was genuine Star Trek to them. It had optimism, excitement, emotion, humor and all sorts of themes.

And no, they are not unwashed mashes or mtv generation teens or any other such nonsense some say to feel superior and enlightened.
it's perfectly fine if someone doesn't like the movie. Just don't use arguments that are completely detached from reality.

Anyway, these things have been discussed around here 1000 times. Nothing came from it then, I don't expect anything will come of it now.:)

First Mr. Hard...I've missed you so and I've been counting the days until you've returned..and now my wish and dreams have been realized!!! Life is worth living again!!!!!!!! :p

Well since these things have been discussed a million times already...that can be applied to a lot - if not ALL of subjects around here so I think we should all just stop posting on any topic that you've already posted on....would you like that?

I'm glad so many people have found that the nuTrek has heart...but from what I've read...most say they like the movie or rather love it... but that it does in fact lack some heart/soul...and we're hoping that in the next installment they can ramp this up a notch... It did have excitement and humor...I absolutely agree with that...but the emotion was very rushed...I barely had time to care because we were on to the next thing.

I will say that I'm very amused by people who will "stick" up for the movie no matter what and not a bad word...can't we all agree that most of us liked the movie but there are flaws and this is what they were and this is what should of been or what we would of liked to been done differently? Just because I point things out...which I feel a lot of people don't want to be bothered doing because it's not the "popluar" opinion but it's not a your with us or against us type of thing...because I'm with the new era.....I am..... but I'm not drinking the everything that JJ and company has done is frikkin awesome kool aid....I just don't like that flavor.

I am an old TOS fan from the sixties too and while I'm not head over heels in love with Trek XI, it was entertaining at least. Went to see it twice....on the fence about whether or not I will buy it on DVD. It was fairly good but had some holes in it that had me scratching my head. Its not a movie to think about....watch it for the action and it's fun.

...most say they like the movie or rather love it...

I refer you to the poll.

Edit: Never mind, bleary eyes; most say they love it, yes.

Must... take... power nap... NOW.

And what do you think Borg? Could this movie of had a little more heart & soul? Would you like to see more heart/soul in the next round....? Or do you feel that it's good as is and nothing else major is really needed.

Hmm...fan since September 1966 here.

I loved XI.

It's not the Trek movie I would have made. But I enjoyed the heck out of it.

And I do think XI has heart and soul, with the realtionships at the the center of the movie.

BTW, I'm not easy to please when it comes to movies, as I my taste runs primarily to classic, silent, B&W, art, independent and foreign films. I find the SW prequels unwatchable and I thought TDK was a mess.

Thank you Rackon, I appreciate your opinion and do respect it as I share your love for classic films. I like what Omega said too...it's not a movie to think about...I think that is where I'm going wrong here..I'm doing something that i don't normally do ...which is think! LOL LOL LOL.

Any fan, even a fan with half his brain tied behind his back could acknowledge this was a good film. It's almost as if J.J. Abrams was given talent on loan from God. Mega-Dittos. :techman:
I suppose with half my brain tied behind my back, I would say this was a good film. But I still wouldn't say that J.J. has any divine talent, even if I held such beliefs - I don't think he has anything other than fairly average talent, frankly.

If it weren't labeled Star Trek, I'd put Star Trek right up there with The Island and Transformers (appropriately, given the writers), two other high-action sci-fi 'hits' without a great deal of genius, but decent enough to sell a lot of popcorn. It's not a 'bad' film, but nothing about it inspired me or excited me. I won't spend my time worrying about how it 'violated canon' or raped anyone's childhood, but I also think that's no different than insisting any thinking being has to "admit" it's a good film or, worse, divinely crafted.

Did the scene at the very start of the movie not move you? I thought it packed quite a powerful emotional punch.

To me, Spock's turmoil about what path to chose and the loss of his mother (world) were also in the heart/soul mold you refer to.

What this movie did otherwise was introduce the Star Trek universe to the movie-going public at large, while still remaining largely faithful to the archetypes embodied by Kirk, Spock and Bones. It did so magnificently IMO.

Having said all of that, I think the shakey cam and lens flares could be pared back, and some "heavier" moments could be interspersed with the breakneck action scenes, but I don't want the movie to become bogged down either.

Several have pointed out what I agree with too, and that is, with the introductory phase out of the way, there can be much more "meat" to the next installment, which I eagerly await.

WHERE ARE THE SPOILERS?

You all have to understand people (some fans) have high standards when it comes to Trek...especially TOS and we expect a lot out of it...

I have high standards for the SF TV shows I choose to follow. I've never cared for BSG (either one), "Blake's Seven", "Stargate"... I got into TOS via TMP and TAS. For years fans told me that my favourite movie of all time, TMP, was sub-par ST.

I have reservations for how early DS9, early VOY and Season Two ENT unfolded. But JJ's ST meets my standards. Too bad for you that you don't "get" it.

The movie-going public at large doen't know about Star Trek?

I think the movie-going public at large has had too much of Star Trek with 700+ episodes quite frankly. Burn out was as much a problem with the last few movies and TV series as the writing or concepts.

It's been said, but I'll add my voice to the crowd noting that not all Old Fans disliked the movie. Fan since the premiere of TAS, and I enjoyed it. Flaws? Sure. But an overall fun movie. I'm not sure what they could have done, outside of CGI recreation of 1966-vintage Shatner, et al, to improve it, but given what they had, they put more care into than you might see in Hollywood these days.

This movie is set in an alternate time line right, so Trek fans like myself shouldn't worry about a screen writer rewriting Trek history as was seen in TOS!?
After reading several dozen movie spoilers I'm seriously thinking about seeing this movie.

James

Regarding the "old fans" thing, I can only relate my mother's opinion - she's been a fan since September 1966, and the first thing she did after seeing the new movie was walk across the hall to the next theater and see it again. After seeing it for a third time, she told me, "This is the movie I've been waiting for since 1970."

I'm a hard core-old school classic TOS fan. I hate the mediocrity and utter blandness of 24th century Trek. It's so different and so far removed from everything I loved about the original series that I haven't really enjoyed Trek in almost 20 years. So, THIS old school fan is absolutely delighted that Trek..as I know it and love it...has returned. It's like seeing an old friend again. They could have REALLY screwed this up. But they didn't.

Star Trek...MY kind of Star Trek...action, creative and imaginative adventure, laced with humor, romance and suspence , is back. I couldn't be happier.

i have i standards for trek. watched first run tos as a kid and thought the new movie had a lot of soul and heart.

different strokes different folks and not some of us dont

have as high standards as others.
:)

interestingly enough one thing the new movie has done at least with
some people i know has bought them back into the fold.
they have rediscovered their love of trek due to this.
because they see the true elements of star trek in the film.

it is a parallel universe.
it has many elements from tos and to me the characters very much have the essence of their tos counterparts even if some of their history is different.

BTW, regarding "old fans" who are supposed to share these concerns - how old a fan do you have to be to be an old fan? I'm never sure if I qualify for these things.

...she told me, "This is the movie I've been waiting for since 1970."
 I thought I trademarked that! My lawyer is getting a strongly worded email in the morning. Anyway, your mom and I should do lunch.
I've had a few conversations with her about the movie that seem to mirror threads from this forum. Not every thread, of course - I haven't spent two weeks arguing with her over whether the new ship is 725m or 762m, for instance.

You may call me an old fan of TOS(I'm 45), first it was TOS in the late 60's early 70's(reruns!:)), then TAS(just 22 episodes)early 70's.
I'll just give a mention to TNG, DS9, voyager and Enterprise, they may be Star Trek but TOS is the Best!

James

I'm an old fan, from back in the 70's syndication heyday. TNG was never "my" Star Trek, though I found it very enjoyable. DS9, VOY, and ENT weren't my Trek either. In every way that counts, the new movie is my Star Trek--and I'm glad to have it back.
