OK which old British sitcoms do you remember and love?

For me

Fawlty Towers - goes without saying it's a classic
Robin's Nest
The Goodies - More slapstick but still I'd consider it a sitcom
Some Mothers Do 'ave Em
Open All Hours
Keeping Up Appearances
On The Buses

Just finished series 1 of Some Mothers. That employment exchange episode had me in fits of laughter...

Can you imagine Frank Spenser as our front line against an alien invasion?

Are You Being Served? (And I am unanimous in this!)

Allo Allo!

The Piglet Files

Fawlty Towers

The Brittas Empire

The Black Adder

Red Dwarf

Keeping Up Appearances

Seriously, Coco Pops, stop putting TV and movie threads in Misc. This belongs in TV & Media.

Comedy shows I liked (not just sitcoms) in no particular order

To Death Does Us Pass
Keeping Up Appearances
Red Dwarf
Steptoe and Son
Are You Being Served
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Are You Being Served
The Goodies
On the Buses
Some Mothers Do Have Them
Porridge
Please Sir
Black Adder
Maid Marion and Her Merry Men

The last two because of Tony Robinson

Only Fools and Horses is the one I remember the most for being both funny and containing believable characters doing their foolish things.

The Young Ones was just.... well I guess You'd have to have been there (in the early eighties) to know just exactly what it was, but hysterically funny it certainly was!

Not really sure if The Strangerers can be considered as a sitcom, but it certainly was funny!

These just off the top of my mind, more are surely to come to me.

Fawlty Towers
Keeping Up Appearances
Are You Being Served

and the one I haven't seen anyone mention (maybe because you don't think it is old enough?)...

COUPLING :techman:

Monty Python's Flying Circus
Fawlty Towers
The Young Ones
The Benny Hill Show

These pretty much span my childhood and teenage years.

Are You Being Served
Faulty Towers
Absolutely Fabulous
Coupling ^^SO good, Triumphant! :bolian:
Monty Python
Jeeves and Wooster
Friday Night Dinner
Doc Martin

Peeked at the index of my collection...

  • Black Books - Dylan Moran AND Bill Bailey!!! what's not to like?
  • dinnerladies - Liked how 'down to Earth' Victoria Wood's take on comedy was.
  • Game On - And I am one of those weirdos that liked both Ben Chaplin and Niel Stuke as Matt.
  • Gimme Gimme Gimme - Not the best of the best, but I still put on an episode every now and then.
  • The IT Crowd - (does it qualify as 'old'?)
  • Jeeves and Wooster - Duh!
  • Look Around You - May very well be categorized as a sketch show.
  • Midsomer Murders - While the first few series are great british countryside mysteries, the show became kind of a parody of itself in later series - which made it hilarious!
  • My Family - I just :adore: Zoë Wanamaker
  • Not Going Out - I'm not really a Lee Mack-fan, but some episodes ARE rather funny.
  • One Foot in the Grave - Who knew a grumpy old man could be so funny to watch?
  • The Royle Family - After Fools & Horses it's my favourite 'Working Class Britcom'!
  • Rumpole of the Bailey - Or is that categorized as a drama?
  • The Smoking Room - If you've ever been a smoker or worked in an office building you're bound to find it hysterical!
  • The Thin Blue Line - The only thing starring Rowan Atkinson I can stand watching... But I REALLY like it!!
  • Yes Minister (and the sequel) - Also: Duh!

And of course the sketch shows: League of Gentlemen, Little Britain, Fry & Laurie, Dave Allen (world's first sit-down comedian!)... and loads more, I think.
