okay..YOU cast it...

I'm fine with the casting as is, except for Scotty. I agree that Paul McGillion would be better. I wonder why he didn't get the role.
I think Abrams wanted Pegg because he knew Pegg could deliver the British male demographic -- and some of the British female audiece, too.

That's not to belittle Pegg's acting ability (which I think is pretty good -- see 'Spaced' as evidence of that), but I think his popularity -- especially in the U.K. -- was a big factor.

I wanted Eion Bailey as Kirk and Paul McGillion as Scotty. But I'm willing to see what Pine can do. I doubt that wassisface is going to work out as Scotty but stranger things have happened...

Sinese would be a good McCoy except he is too old. Urban seems like he should do fine, as long as he doesn't frak up the Georgia accent.

Wassisface is a "bigger name." I think that decision is going to bite everyone in the butt when the guy is singled out as the worst element in the entire movie.

To be fair, Simon Pegg is a great actor, and though I was hoping for Paul McGillion to get the role, I'm willing to give Simon Pegg a chance.

If there is a problem with Scotty in the movie, I think it'll be more a problem with the writing then it will be with Pegg's performance. Scotty in TOS was the handyman who his ship and its systems like an expert, could be relied on to fix any technical problem, had a bit of a gruff attitude, loved drinking a bit too much, but was an excellent friend to his shipmates.

Meanwhile, Scotty in Trek XI is a joker who has been exiled to some out of the way outpost after he caused a transporter accident that messed up a hundred year-old dog. I'm sure he probably still drinks, mainly because Abrams or Orci remember watching By Any Other Name. Except, in an interview, Orci refers to it as the time Scotty got into a drinking contest and knew only that the drink was "blue" even though us real Trek fans know the drink was really green.

First of all, we can't tell from the 2.5 seconds and 6 words spoken by Scotty in the trailer whether Pegg's Scotty is similar to or different than TOS Scotty.

Secondly...
.
Possible Spoiler below:

...Secondly, if it really was Admiral Jonathan Archer's dog that Scotty "messed up", I truly doubt it was a 100-year old dog. It is quite possible that Archer may have owned more than one dog during his long lifetime. ;)

Kirk - Chris Pine
Spock - Zachary Quinto
McCoy - Karl Urban
Scotty - Simon Pegg

The others i'm not really fussed on. The main 4 are who really matter, and i couldn't be happier.

I have read grumblings over the past week about the casting of the movie..from PINE to BANA and others as well...well, you armchair quarterbacks, who would you have casted in this movie if you had had your way?? And remember the 'budget' aspect when you do this, because I am sure JJ had to stay in a certain area of cost, and I think he did a great job...

So....who would you cast instead???

Most of the choices are acceptable. The only two who I really, seriously have problems with are Pegg (I love the guy but he's not remotely like Scotty) and Yelchin (who not only doesn't resemble Chekov in any way but is, apparently, being used to play to the WORST aspects of the character only).

I'm not sold on Pine... but I can see him playing Kirk acceptable well to suspend my disbelief. I love Quinto's "look" but his voice is jarring as Spock... Nimoy's deep voice is as central to "Spock" as his look... and Quinto is "squeeky" by comparison. And then there are the various reviews who've said that they hate the guy's performance... we'll see if those are justifiable or not.

I LOVE Urban as McCoy, but the one time we hear his voice, I didn't pick up any hint of "Southern drawl," which is my only quibble with him.

As far as I'm concerned, the only "TOS" characters who belong in this movie are Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, (I'm not considering Pike in there... he's not one of the "regular cast") though I don't have a problem with Scotty being present IF he's important to the plot. As for the rest of the "second bananas," (Sulu, Uhura, Chekov)... they have no place in this movie at all as far as I'm concerned, so my "casting choice" for each of them would ideally be... NOBODY.

That said... if I were in charge of this movie AND if I were casting TOS roles... I'd have chosen an actual Russian actor (not someone with russian background but someone FROM RUSSIA) for Chekov, and someone from Africa (ideally someone whose first language is Swahili) as Uhura. There are actors and actresses from those parts of the world, and I found a couple of young russian actors who actually LOOK the part of Chekov, too.

Sulu is a different matter. I have no problem with Cho's look, and he may be good in the role. The only issue I have with him is an issue that really ought not be an issue at all... the fact that they cast a Korean in a role which has, for forty years, been associated with having a Japanese background. It doesn't bother ME in the least... and yes, the people from that part of the world are genetically common enough. But it's politically troublesome (and perpetuates the image of the "insensitive, self-righteous, insulting ugly american") to cast a member of one ethnic group in place of a member of another ethnic group, when there's so much bad blood between those two groups. SO... I'd probably have tried to get a Japanese actor for the part, though I have no problem, personally, with Cho so far.

I, like many others, think McGillian was born for the part of Scotty. He can do the "intense" look that's far more central to Montgomery Scott than the "funny" bit is, but still do the humor. Go back and pay attention to Scotty from TOS and note how often he's "grim" or "angry" or "distressed" or "determined"... versus how often he's "gleefully smiling." Pegg CAN do that sort of thing (see "Hot Fuzz") but not in a way that comes across remotely similarly to Doohan.

While Pine might be OK... there are many other actors who look more "Shatner-like" and could do just as well, and probably better. Actually, and I know this may sound sort of goofy, but I think Mark Walberg would have been a much better choice (and I generally try to shy away from "big name" choices, especially ones with lots of baggage).

As far as Pike... well, since this is an alternative reality where Pike never did Talos, never got promoted to Fleet Captain, never got crippled by delta-radiation rescuing cadets... then by all means, Ray Liotta could still work as an older, more seasoned Pike.

Hmmm... now, who to cast as "old Spock?" That's a tough one... ;)

Because Simon Pegg got it and unlike us, the directors and producers
actually saw him in the role for more than 5 seconds. I'll trust their judgement.

QFT.

I've also enjoyed a lot of films Pegg has been in and while McGillion looks a lot more like Doohan, we weren't there at the casting table watching either of them read for the part. Pegg got the part over McGillion for reasons we will likely never know beyond "he was best for the role."

Old Spock: Are you even supposed to BE here this year?
Nero: Don't get me started...

I'm pretty happy with what we got. Quinto and Urban are prefect as Spock and McCoy as far as looks, and I'm pretty sure Urban will play the part well. Quinto, I have no idea, I've never seen him act.

Pine seems ok as Kirk.

My first impression of the Scotty guy was pretty bad. Since when does Scotty act/look like a looney tune?

Uhura, fine whatever.

Chekov and Sulu don't even need to be in the film for all I care. They were barely in TOS. As it is, neither actor remotely resembles the original.

I happy to accept all those they cast. I expect to feel a difference between TOS characters and their replacements but I'm going to think positively and be open to the new feel of this Trek. What do I have to lose - except perhaps $10 should the movie be lousy. The directors, actors and producers stand to lose a lot more so if they give me a lousy movie - they hurt themselves more.

I'm going to see the film without constantly comparing it to TOS, and enjoy (hopefully) it on its own merits as a movie.

This WSJ article impressed me on how much the 2 main characters wanted those roles. I think that is a compliment to Trek in general.

And they couldn't drive the point through Michael Bay's skull that the reason he was named "Bumblebee" was directly related to his being a VW Bug, and that changing him to a Camaro kinda loses something.

Kinda explains the cluelessness with regard to the Enterprise, now that I think about it...

I'm going with "Since TOS."

Gary Sinese may look like McCoy, but he seems to be a "humorless" individual. I think if Sinise tried to act "cantankerous, but charming and warm" he could not do it in a believable manner and would fail.
"Sounds like and looks like" only goes so far when trying to portray a pre-existing character. Aside from the resemblance to De Kelley, Sinise is all wrong for the part.
I think Liotta as Pike has a similar problem. It only works if you're looking at still photographs of the actors. Watching Liotta in motion and talking just doesn't say "Chris Pike" to me.

It's the gestalt - Liotta comes across as mediterranean, Hunter as completely whitebread.

Plus, Liotta has had some really bad work done:

wow! when was he hit by a train?
