Ok. What is the chance of a Picard spinoff?

One thing to remember with "Legacy" is that they'll be starting from scratch. It's my understanding that nothing from Picard, beyond the Enterprise-D bridge, was saved. That'll greatly bump up the start-up cost. Even Strange New Worlds had the benefit of the Bridge already having been constructed for Discovery. Albeit in a somewhat different configuration.

What are they saving the E-D bridge for?

I’m sure the TNG cast was crazy expensive, we know from previous seasons that almost 10% of the budget already went to Stewart. When you want to do a reunion show everyone’s price goes up compared to what they’d normally charge, because now they have bargaining power. Most of them are C- and D-listers, it was an opportunity for a big paycheck.

Since @Lord Garth and others have mentioned that S3 is the TOS movie of the TNG crew, it sort of parallels another aspect of those movies, where about 1/3 of the budgets of the later ones went to Shatner and Nimoy.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Wasn't the Ent-D bridge loaned to them from some fan film outfit or something?

I don't really see "Legacy" happening. Paramount aren't exactly swimming in cash and I imagine all the buzz about a possible merger with Warner Bros Discovery will make them even more cautious.

I think Legacy is going to happen, but I'm not going to spend all of '24 arguing over it. That's my New Year's Resolution for here. If it happens, great. If it doesn't happen, well, I still think it's been a great run.

The first season of Picard gave us deeper insight into the Romulans than we ever had before. PIC S1 was also what I thought the first New Trek series would be. In 2009, I assumed that if/when there was another Trek series, it would follow up on Romulus' destruction in the Prime Timeline. I like the more adult tone, how they handled the XBs, the crew of La Sirena, and Picard saving the day by reasoning with Soji (which I stand by saying was a very TNG thing to do). Biggest Highlight: Picard and Seven comparing notes about life after the Collective.

Then there's the second season of Picard. Even though I think it's the weakest of the three seasons, it still had a lot to offer. Seeing all characters having to navigate through The Confederation and figure out what was what was great. It was great to see Picard in Present Day, since the TNG characters never went back to it. Seven as well, since she wasn't part of VOY yet when that series went back to the '90s in "Future's End". Seven/Raffi make a great duo. I always wished Assignment: Earth had gone to series, so we got a little taste of it. Laris was criminally underused, so I appreciate Orla Brady had a chance to play Talin. Having Brent Spiner as Adam Soong was a stroke of genius. He made for a great antagonist, in a completely different way from Lore. Finally: Lea Thompson directing the episode where they time-travel back! Couldn't have given her a more appropriate episode to direct.

The third season of Picard completed TNG's movie run, IMO. In the future, whenever I watch the TNG Movies, I'll always go straight to PIC Season 3 afterwards. It's now something I can watch as one whole thing. Whereas before, I'd only watch the TNG Movies if I was watching them with the TOS Movies. I'm happier with where PIC S3 left the TNG crew than I was with where Nemesis left them. It introduced new characters who I want to see more of. And finally, Captain Seven of Nine of the USS Enterprise is something I never knew I wanted to see!

In retrospect: I like that we got three different things for each of the three seasons. It wasn't all the same thing for 30 episodes. It's how I know Legacy, if it happens, won't be "more of the same!", even if other people like to say that's what it would be.

She brings up some interesting plot possibilities:

* How does someone like her go from being a lone wolf to commanding a crew of five hundred people?

* IMHC, Seven is worried about her legacy. She wants to be remembered as being something other than a bloodthirsty killer.

No idea. I could be totally wrong but, to be blunt, I don't think Starfleet Academy will go the full four years with one group of cadets all going from freshman to senior. I'd be surprised.

I think Star Trek in general messed up the chance it had to gain Zoomers. So, I think this won't get them as much of the youth audience as they were hoping for.

I can tell you that when I was in school, the last thing I wanted to do when I got home was watch about characters in school. Star Trek, among several other shows and movies, was my escape from that. I'm sure a lot of young people in the would-be audience would feel the same way. They want to get away from the lives they're stuck in, not be reminded of them. Especially a sci-fi or fantasy fan. What drew me to Star Trek over 30 years ago was that it was an escape. So much worse back then. Today, I can always just leave a job and get another one. I couldn't just leave my school and go to another one. Now, I can live where I want, I can go out when I want, I can live how I want. None of that happens when you're a kid, so escapism becomes even more important at that age.
What they should have done is have a show that would appeal to legacy Gen X and elder Millennial fans that have older children which they could watch together. Something four quadrant PG-13 / TV-14. Which could very well be Legacy, but that'll likely come way too late.

SFA wise... maybe they have a group of juniors and a group of freshmen and gradually rotate the cast? There actually are good teen dramas that can have broader appeal (ref: VERONICA MARS), but I think this one will end up in a super narrow cul de sac.

So would Legacy as proposed.

I have no children but, at the very least, my niece will/would be watching it with her parents.

My brother and I were already The Next Generation of fans in my family... and now the Legacy continues. ;)

Once again: DSC Season 2 came out in 2019. SNW Season 1 came out in 2022.

This is a long process. It's not "Snap your fingers and there it is!" And no one knows what's going to come out of the merger talks. @eschaton gave hard data. No one else has. Right now it's, "nothing to say it'll happen, nothing to say it wont." It's unknown, it's limbo. And let's not forget the strikes ate up a lot of 2023.

If we're in 2025 and there's still nothing, then I'll say, "That ship has sailed!"
