writer, director, character choice

Variety reports
the film is written by Dan Milano (”Robot Chicken”).

Dimension Films has signed Steve Carr to direct Short Circuit. Carr’s most recent directing was behind the camera of the Kevin James hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

At least it's being remade by the same people as the first one.

Plus maybe they can make a sequel that doesn't completely suck.

I keep forgetting there was a sequel.

I wouldn't mind a combination of CGI and an actual robot. That seems to be the closest we can hope to get.

I see no reason at all to use CGI for something as simple as a robot that we can just build and control. There's nothing about Johnny 5 they cannnot do practicaly and would require CGI.

robot design

Agreed. If they had the technology back in 1985 they surely have it today. Not sure if we'll get tank-style treads or wheels though...
Military-esque design would probably have the treads.
It probably wouldn't be so boxy though as far as the head and would probably have something like the Bjork-style robot for the top
