FINDLAY, Ohio – An Ohio teenager says he expects to be suspended from a Christian school for attending a public school prom with his girlfriend.
Officials at Heritage Christian School in Findlay had warned 17-year-old Tyler Frost that he would be suspended and prohibited from attending graduation if he went to the Saturday dance. The fundamentalist Baptist school in northwest Ohio forbids dancing, rock music and hand holding.
Frost says he went to the dance because he wanted to experience the prom and didn't think it was wrong.
School officials say he could complete his final exams separately to receive a diploma.
Frost's stepfather says the rules shouldn't apply outside of school and he may take legal action if Frost is suspended.

Christian fundamentalists like this may be more common than you think. I went to a private Christian high school with similar rules, and I thought nothing of it at the time. I assumed these attitudes were common among Christians, and yes, this is in the modern US.

As an adult, I've come across people who don't believe people like me exist. It's very weird, because these people tend to assume I must have been very "sheltered" or just grew up in a bubble. But I tend to think the same about them because they seem unaware that there are very religious people who actually live according to their beliefs.

For more insight into some religious communities, you should see films like "Saved" or "Jesus Freaks". I think they are very accurate.

My question to you is why are holding hands and dancing against Christian values? Young couples can have a good time and show affection without having pre-marital sex.

Granted, my knowledge of Christian theology is limited, but I don't quite get why the school would try and ban such things outside of a classroom context.

some fundies think any kind of music is wrong. I think it goes back to the idea that any kind of fun and enjoyment is wrong because then you're not suffering and so are not being saintly/holy.

I attended a Christian school for 8 years and they give you a great education, but had twisted ideals that dont need to be taught to young kids.

We were told interracial dating was wrong because God told the Israelites not to intermingle with other groups. God told them that because He didnt want those other groups false gods to rub off on Israel, NOT because they were a different race - but this is the type of teaching we got.

Oh yeah, we didnt have proms either, we had potlucks where we brought a dish and listened to people perform various religious skits because dancing coudl lead to "fornication"

I'm a christian, but I aint that nutty. I danced plenty and not once did it ever lead to "fornication" and I haev dated outside my race on plenty occasions and so far no lighting bolt has struck me down.

This school is stupid and should let the kid graduate.
