Oh for cryin' out loud! (Uncle SPOILERS)

I'm starting to think that the Siskos might be the only major characters that didn't have any form of a "daddy issue".

Actually, they sort of did.

Ben wanted Jake to go into Starfleet, Jake didn't want to.

At least Ben didn't push the matter, tho' he had been just assuming he knew what the kid wanted, and hadn't even bothered to ask.

And now his father is gone and he's alone. His mother died when he was young.

As if having daddy issues or not is a big issue.

Exactly, he didn't push the issue and came to respect his son's decision. But that's nothing when you look at how frakked up everyone else's family is.

I don't know a whole lot about the TOS characters' backgrounds, but this is what I do know
Spock - had independence issues with his father
McCoy - pulled the plug on his own dad and is guilty because a cure came out not long after

TNG:
Picard - his father, mother, and brother all disapproved of his joining Starfleet
Riker - hated his father and had all kinds of issues with him
Data - I suppose you could say being abandoned and only meeting his father once before he died might be considered an issue, but then again it might be stretching it since Data was supposed to be unemotional
Yar - was abandoned as a child and had to fend for herself and her younger sister on her own
Worf - both his parents were presumed killed in a massacure, and later he found out his father allowed himself to be captured (IIRC) He also didn't seem to much care for his adoptive parents
Wesley - his father was killed while he was young and thus he grew up without a father figure, and it somehow involved Picard
Troi - had issues with her mother, and as it turns out an older sister she never knew she had
Ro - her father was tortured to death right in front of her, and she came to hate him for showing weakness as he died
Geordi - couldn't get laid, poor bastard

DS9:
Kira - almost killed her own mother after she found out she was a colaborator
Bashir - hated his parents for having him genetically enhanced
Odo - his "family" was made up of a bunch of genocidal maniacs, and he resented the Bajoran scientist who studied him for a very long time
Nog/Rom/Quark - now there's a frakked up family right there
Ezri - had issues with her control freak of a mother
Garak - was the illegitimate son of the head of the Obsidian Order

VOY:
Chakotay - turned hsi back on his traditionalist father, at least until after he was killed by those bastard Cardassians
Paris - had a hard time trying to live up to his family name back when he was actually trying, then wound up shaming the family name and being disowned by his father.
Torres - her father left at a young age and she loathed her mother's traditional ways

ENT:
Archer - they never really did make clear what the issue was here, other than that his dad had died and he was pissy at the Vulcans because of it
Trip - why didn't he visit his family after the Xindi thing was resolved?
T'Pol - apparently her father died at some point before her adult-hood, and it was pretty easy to see she didn't get along with her mother very well
Reed - his father bemoaned the fact that he didn't live up to tha family's naval tradition
Travis - apparently his father and his brother didn't take to kindly to him leaving the family business to join Starfleet
Hoshi - what we saw of her father made him look like he was as real dick, but techncially this was a senario all in Hoshi's head during Vanishing Point. But then she'd probably know better than anyone else ;)

Gads, how many out of how many is that as far as main and supporting characters go.

Everybody has a daddy issue and a mommy issue of some kind. Even if one gets along with their parents, there's probably something.

Which is why this franchise has been around over forty years and Leave it to Beaver hasn't been. ;)

Wow, you quoted that whole thing for a one-liner?

No one's saying it has to be feel good television or anything, I was just noting that the vast majority of the characters already seemed to have family issues, so giving Kirk an abusive uncle sounded a bit over the top to me.

First Beaver

Ah...I think everyone looks back fondly at First Beaver.

...so giving Kirk an abusive uncle sounded a bit over the top to me.

See, the term abusive can mean so many things and can have so many impacts. We really don't know what they mean by this. Maybe Kirk left because the guy was an asshole and didn't want to be around him. For all we know, Kirk wasn't abused in the Media Sensationalist way. Perhaps Uncle Spoilers was simply worthless, Kirk didn't want to deal with it, and left. I am more curious to know why the uncle is around in the first place. No mom or dad around? Dead? In Starfleet?

I agree. But what really made my eyes roll is when I took my daughter to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory back in 2005. I loved the first movie and the book, so I was looking forward taking my daughter to the movie and to seeing it myself.
It's a good movie, but for some reason, Burton had to give Wonka a backstory. Something to explain why he did what he did. Guess what they decided on? Wonka's father used to forbid him from eating candy. When Wonka rebelled and threatened to leave home, his father let him and told him never to come back. They were estranged for many years after.

As I said in a post way back, it's cliche. Too easy. Not subtle. But with Trek, let's just see how it turns out this time. Then, we'll let 'em have it.

But see, since he didn't know he was abandoned by his mother it doesn't count.

Except that eventually the entire denouement of DS9 depended upon that fact.

Just like some little bit of Kirk's childhood backstory now involves a bad relationship with an uncle.

I don't know, sounds kind of lame. I suppose Kirk'll be resentful of Scotty and inspire the colony of Teetotal VIII to create synthehol.

Spin it however you want but I don't think anybody truly wanted to see this.

I agree with you in principle, but I think we're worrying too much about what will probably be only a few minutes of screen time.

This film is not called "How Kirk Overcame an Abusive Uncle", it's called "Star Trek", and I bet it is mostly about trekking among the stars.

If the movie was made up only of stuff we wanted to see then it would be predictable. Drama comes from conflict and overcoming adversity, this would be included in the category of adversity. It's only a problem if it's poorly executed, and I don't think it will be.
