Exactly, he didn't push the issue and came to respect his son's decision. But that's nothing when you look at how frakked up everyone else's family is.
I don't know a whole lot about the TOS characters' backgrounds, but this is what I do know
Spock - had independence issues with his father
McCoy - pulled the plug on his own dad and is guilty because a cure came out not long after
TNG:
Picard - his father, mother, and brother all disapproved of his joining Starfleet
Riker - hated his father and had all kinds of issues with him
Data - I suppose you could say being abandoned and only meeting his father once before he died might be considered an issue, but then again it might be stretching it since Data was supposed to be unemotional
Yar - was abandoned as a child and had to fend for herself and her younger sister on her own
Worf - both his parents were presumed killed in a massacure, and later he found out his father allowed himself to be captured (IIRC) He also didn't seem to much care for his adoptive parents
Wesley - his father was killed while he was young and thus he grew up without a father figure, and it somehow involved Picard
Troi - had issues with her mother, and as it turns out an older sister she never knew she had
Ro - her father was tortured to death right in front of her, and she came to hate him for showing weakness as he died
Geordi - couldn't get laid, poor bastard
DS9:
Kira - almost killed her own mother after she found out she was a colaborator
Bashir - hated his parents for having him genetically enhanced
Odo - his "family" was made up of a bunch of genocidal maniacs, and he resented the Bajoran scientist who studied him for a very long time
Nog/Rom/Quark - now there's a frakked up family right there
Ezri - had issues with her control freak of a mother
Garak - was the illegitimate son of the head of the Obsidian Order
VOY:
Chakotay - turned hsi back on his traditionalist father, at least until after he was killed by those bastard Cardassians
Paris - had a hard time trying to live up to his family name back when he was actually trying, then wound up shaming the family name and being disowned by his father.
Torres - her father left at a young age and she loathed her mother's traditional ways
ENT:
Archer - they never really did make clear what the issue was here, other than that his dad had died and he was pissy at the Vulcans because of it
Trip - why didn't he visit his family after the Xindi thing was resolved?
T'Pol - apparently her father died at some point before her adult-hood, and it was pretty easy to see she didn't get along with her mother very well
Reed - his father bemoaned the fact that he didn't live up to tha family's naval tradition
Travis - apparently his father and his brother didn't take to kindly to him leaving the family business to join Starfleet
Hoshi - what we saw of her father made him look like he was as real dick, but techncially this was a senario all in Hoshi's head during
Vanishing Point. But then she'd probably know better than anyone else
Gads, how many out of how many is that as far as main and supporting characters go.
