Hey all,

It's about that time again, so starting up the new Fantasy Baseball thread for talking trades, talking shit, and just boasting about our teams.

There's the 3rd year of the TrekBBS Keeper league, with yours truly as the defending Champ looking to repeat, while shaming Coaster whenever possible. :klingon:

Also will post the details in a few minutes once I finish setting it up, but will be firing up the new single-season version of the ol' Fantasy baseball league as well, so looking for 12-14 people willing to give that a shot. Been talked into using ESPN for it this year, so we'll see how that goes.

Also, not too early for me to start pushing for trades, but looking for a blockbuster in the Keeper league. I want a stud 1B, and if you shoot me a PM, we can chat about the parts you'd get back. I've got more than my allotted 6 keepers again, so looking for that 2-1 trade that increases the value of one of my keeper spots. Got a stud 1B? We should chat :)

Well Scout beat me too it... But we had been talking about one of us creating the thread.

Here was my opening that i was writing while scout got in before me.....

Well it is nearly that time again, with spring training fast approaching that means fantasy baseball time. I thought it was appriote to start the thread since the trucks are starting to head down to Florida soon, my local news even had a short little piece on the Twins getting ready.

Scout strongly considering your trade offer for Pujols. Any one else feel free to make an offer.

Edit: forgot my normal dig on coaster.. ;)

Coaster, sorry to hear about Chase Utley out for the first part of the year... hehe

Ok, the yearly league has been created! To join, please send me a PM with your email address, and I'll send you the invite. I set it as private to keep the riff-raff out, so can't just post a league ID number, unfortuntely.

It's set at 12 people right now, but willing to bump it to 14 if we get a decent showing...

I'm in.

Also, whoever is in charge of the Keeper league has some housekeeping to do before we can get back in.

invite sent. As for the Keeper league, it works fine for me... Hitting the link from the old one will also bring you to the new one.

And considering the trade offer, Ice. Seems like we should be able to match up on something...

Maybe this year I can win a week before the all-star break. If we only played post all star break last year, I would have been in the playoffs. ;)

I'd still prefer Yahoo for the yearly leauge, but I'm still interested in joining again this year (PM sent).

Just looked over my keeper team. Had to move some things around because a few of my keepers are no longer eligible for more than one position. I was kind of counting on Lance Berkman being eligible for OF and 1B again, but now it looks like I'll have to use him in the utility spot (unless Scout's got a good deal for me).

Not sure who to dump: I have eight players I'd like to hang on to and I need to whittle that down to six.

that's always the tricky part: trying to figure out who's really a keeper, who you can drop, and who that 7th guy is that you just try and pick back up in the first non-keeper round. If you're careful and do it right, you can get most of the same team back. I definitely redrafted a bunch of guys from my first team onto last year's.

As for Berkman, will have to think about that one. Definitely worth tossing around names, depending on what you had in mind...

And sent your invite, Peg

Pegs and Habs Fan, you're invites are in your email boxes. That brings us to 6 so far, plenty of room left, just shoot me a PM with your email in it...

Ok, after reading the league page, I see that the draft date is tentative for ESPN. I'd prefer to draft the week before the season starts (starts on Apr. 6, so I'd prefer to draft March 30 through April 3...or something like that).

eh, i could go either way. Don't really see much problem with doing it then, gives you a week and change to figure out your team, make trades, etc. Shouldn't really be drafting players that are still fighting for a roster spot, and even that is sorted out by then.

Set my team up for the yearly league.

The tentative draft date in both leagues is looking iffy for me right now, but I'll worry about that later.

Not necessarily true. You can make some good late picks based on guys that win jobs late or get a spot in the rotation. There were several guys that fit that bill last season. As for trades? I think that's a total non-consideration here. These leagues have fewer trades in two seasons than I'm used to seeing in non-BBS leagues in a single month. There have been less than 10 trades in two years in the keeper league. What huge trades are people dying to make in that 10 day period that we know they won't make the rest of the season? Drafting on March 30, for example, leaves nearly a full week to "figure things out" and make trades. What's the rush to draft and have 17 days to do all this "figuring?"

If we had a past where people made big trades and moves with an early draft, I'd totally agree with you. Since that historically is NOT what happens, there is no harm in waiting another week and knowing about how everything is breaking down job-wise in MLB before drafting players. Pretty much every money league I've ever played in has always waited to draft until a week or so before. And those leagues actually had trades and way more moves than our leagues typically make.

I guess the only counter I've got for this is that last year, it got all fucked up, and we ended up having to draft after a couple games had already been played.

And if you're only talking about a late-round flier, is it really even a big deal? You talk about someone that is on the bubble to make a 5-man rotation, but in a 12 person team, you probably shouldn't be drafting a 5th starter in the first place, unless he's a stud rookie. But for the rookie, you were going to draft him either way, and let him sit on your bench until it gets figured out or he is called up anyway...

Well, last year the Sox and A's opened in Japan. So that was the issue with a few games being played early. This year there is no such early schedule to worry about. As long as we're drafted by Saturday, the Sunday night game will be readily included in our stats.

As for the other, it's just a possibility. Maybe there's somebody you want to take a chance on drafting late. I'd rather look at the draft with all but the final days of Spring Training to go than draft with still a couple more weeks of Spring Training remaining. What's the hurry to draft? If we did it that Monday, it still leaves six days to play with teams, but allows everybody a chance to see nearly all of Spring Training (and the World Baseball Classic).

Another thing to consider about drafting late, the World Baseball Classic. Heaven forbid anyone get injured during that but it could happen and affect the rankings as well. That, and I've heard a lot about how the WBC screws up a players schedule/routine at the beginning of the season.

Of course I'm fine with whenever we draft. I was wondering if we could move it to a Sunday but it doesn't matter much to me.

A Sunday would be better for me. Otherwise I would not be able to start a draft before 8 or 9pm ET depending on when DST starts. (won't be home until 6 local time on a Monday)

hmm, how about we push it back a week? The WBC is a good argument I hadn't thought of. It ends on the Monday after the draft, so if we slide back a week, that'll all be over, and it'll be right in the middle, with only a few days left to go until opening day?

Weekends would be tougher for me. Ok with pushing the Keeper draft back until 9pm ET, though, as we're already 6 rounds in, so it's a bit shorter than the standard draft...

I *MIGHT* be able to join this year (preferably the Yahoo league). The problem is the Navy computers block all game sites (and Fantasy Sports counts). I recently bought a new computer but I haven't been able to get any internet for it yet. Hopefully that'll change sooner than later.

two bits on that, EMH:

Instead of Yahoo, w're using ESPN for the yearly league this time around. Free live scoring, a little easier interface, etc. We'll see how it plays out.

As for the Navy bit, you should be ok. If you've got NMCI now, ESPN fantasy sports aren't blocked, I can get to them from my NMCI laptop right now. Yahoo isn't blocked either, but the signin page is, so you'd have to take it off the network and on a normal one, get the 'stay signed in' cookie in there, and then come back. Either way ESPN works just fine. That was another plus for me, as I've been at a disadvantage the past couple years, missing out on possible FA pickups because by the time i got home, someone else picked them up...

If you want in, PM me your email address, and I'll send you the invite.
