The odd thing about the Bridge is that if you pull off all the weirdness -- the hostess station, the spotlights aimed into the crews' eyeballs, the barcode scanners, the desk lamps -- what's left behind is actually a good design. It's almost as though someone with an armful of IKEA gift certificates came in after the set was finished and made some "last minute adjustments".

This is spot on!

It wouldn't be a terrible design - moving the communications consol closer to the captain makes sense, and having more consols in the helm 'pit' is good use of space, but then someone went and glued all sorts of tacky shit all over the place.

Because, folks, when it comes to starship bridges, nothing says cool like 23rd Century folk art!

just a point on old Spock - as I understood it Leonard Nimoy was only really having a cameo role in the film - if the story is as we are understanding it, won't he have quite a big role to play?

Hi all,


I thought I might just come here and post my thoughts on this trailer;


I don't like the look of what I see so far. The older members here will remember my opinion of Enterprise (which hasn't changed ) and will know that I regard Trek continuity as very important to ensuring the consistency and richness of the Trek universe.


To be sure that I am not mis-understood, what I will say first of all is that I am not against the recasting of the original series, practicality demands it. All that I am concerned about is the consistency of the characters they represent and to me the trailer seems to suggest that it has been thrown out of the window, judging by Kirk in particular. He was supposed to be a LT on the Faragaut before his posting to the Enterprise.


And looking at the ship, it is just completely wrong to me. The film website clearly states that the film will respect continuity, but it is stretching it to believe that the design of this ship will then be changed to the design of the ship first seen in “The Cage”, then to the refit from the motion picture. I'm not asking for wobbly sets, but there is plenty of scope to update the exterior and interior of the ship to reflect modernity as well as respect the already established design.


I will probably still watch the movie, as it is only a trailer I am commenting upon for now, but so far I am not optimistic that this film will respect the 40 years (minus Enterprise) worth of continuity promised by the film makers.

And you can be assured that I will view this with the same amount of skepticism as I treated Enterprise beforehand.

I don't like the look of what I see so far.

I'm quite relieved by that, based on history; it strongly suggests that the new "Star Trek" film will be remarkably enjoyable.

I feel that this new film is a remake of the original Star Trek and non-continual with the original. It is the same that occured to Battlestar Galactica. As a result, what happens in this new film and its sequels (if there are any) should count under its own seperate canon, IMHO.

Well there's obviously a revised canon here as a point of plot, the question will be whether or not it continues in that canon after the film's end. I would prefer that they continue with established continuity, or try to give us a true prequel. At this point, I'm just hoping it's a good, enjoyable movie, because otherwise Star Trek will probably be dead.

The New Film, Kirk: My Rant

In the new trailer we see a reckless and cocky looking young James Kirk almost driving off a cliff followed by a narration "You never knew your place in the world" which cuts to a now grown, wistful looking Kirk staring at the Enterprise.

It takes hard work, determination, responsibility, and discipline to rise in the ranks of the military, and to take command of your own ship, with men and women under your command. It isn't a whim or something to do for kicks because you love risks and you got nothing better to do. It takes years of service, determination, and maturity to become a high ranking officer.

I just hope the new film is true to that reality of life. I may be over reacting to the new trailer, but with the state of hollywood, where the old values of discipline, soberness, and responsibility are disapearing, I think my concerns are justified. Furthermore, perhaps due to all the Kirk-Picard comparisions over the years, the popular conception of Kirk has degenerated into an image of arrogant, womanizing rule breaker but without the determination, compassion, and seriousness over his duties.

Have you watched the film? No.

Have you seen any other material than any of us have? No.

Do you know for a fact that Kirk doesn't rise to the rank of captain without being a wreckless youth? No.

So really, you've got nothing except for a trailer to go by, which means you know nothing. You don't know that Kirk isn't promoted to the rank of captain because he is actually good at his job.

Besides there have been cases in the military where people have been promoted due to exceptional and outstanding performances in the field of duty.

Uhura was wise when she said "This isn't reality. This is fantasy."

She was describing all movies, heck, all stories or art or expression. It's a distillation of real life, a sifting through the boring bits to get to what's most engaging. Inherent to all art is that it's a slight exaggeration of real life. If it's good it's exaggeration in service of a point. Even biopics of real people tend to condense lives to their most compelling points.
