It looks like this thing IS part of the drilling platform, extended from higher orbit from Nero's ship.

A high powered device then drills a hole through a planet's crust to place something volatile in there, which would then destroy the planet, or turn it into a mess of molten rock floating on a globe of hot magma.

There may be a more devastating twist on it than that, but that's what it looks like so far.

Whatever it is, it's not good for the Spacediver in red ;)

hey did anyone notice that we dont see the Enterprise in combat? We just see the Kelvin getting its but kicked pretty much. Do you all think we will see the enterprise in action, i mean in combat?

I'm guessing that somehow Nero's ship will be destroyed and the Enterprise will somehow help do that, her firepower might be just toy guns compared to nero's ,but i'm sure will see it fire them .

I watched "Enterprise" and liked it a lot. Conceptually this movie has a lot more in common with that series than with any other post-TOS "Star Trek" series, which may be another reason I'm getting such a kick out of all the build-up so far. :)

Kirk's journey is one from self-destructive adolescent to Captain of the Enterprise. He'll need Spock for that. Kirk is also a womanizer. Sure, he can love a woman like Carol Marcus, even father a son, but that's not Kirk's first and true love. No that has been and always has been the Enterprise.

Actually its pretty likely that Kirk never met Carol in this timeline. He was drunk in a bar instead of being well into his Starfleet career.

That's a glaring nonsequitur. It's entirely possible to be drunk in a bar, into your career, meet Carol, and father a child.

It'd be amazing to see them use the "temporal cold war" plot which was mishandled and fail in ENT to not only spin up a good bad guy in this film, but single handidly explain away any and every inconsistency and error between the various filmed treks...

How much would some of these haters hate JJ if he and his crew did that and still made an entertaining story. ;):techman:

Yes, agreed Data Holmes!

Kirk tackles Nero while he's making a transmission to the Suliban and suddenly he's face to face with Archer

Archer-oh boy!

Kirk- my childhood idol!

I'm really interested in this idea that you guys are coming up with, being that I was a huge fan of the Enterprise series, but you know that other fans are going to make a huge fuss lol. Oh well, you can't please everybody. I still love em' just the same. We're all fans and should get along.

But it'd make far more sense to build the various components (engines, secondary hull, pylons, primary hull) on the ground, haul them into space and then assemble the whole ship.

But from the looks of things they just built from the ground up and somewhat randomly to boot.

Even ships and airplanes are built in sections at various locations and then put together in one final place..

Well, we don't build carriers in sections as large as the nacelles and saucer of the Enterprise. The Federation probably could, but it's not clear why they'd want to.

It's also not at all clear why it's preferable to assemble the ship in space. This keeps coming up, but nobody ever makes the positive case for it. Why is it easier to work in space?

I don't see anything that suggests greenness to me. She looks like a caucasian human in shadow.

Well, aside from her...being green, look at her hand on Kirk's arm. They are in exactly the same light and her hand is a much darker, greenish color. Also, her make-up is slightly worn on her fingers.
Just don't see it. You might be right... but from the trailer shots she doesn't look green to me at all. Guess we'll see in May.

Levels adjusted in Photoshop. Green skin, red hair. Just as the actress described her appearance.

(This is a REALLY BIG Reach...)

Maybe that's why the Klingon's have Nero in Jail....
Maybe He WAS/IS (describing Time-Travel confuses the Hell outta me) the Unknown 'Future Guy' from ENTERPRISE.
He became captured by the Trek-Time-Cops and put into a Klingon-Rura Penthe type prison but manages to escape, once again trying to ravage the Star Trek Time line.

(I don't really believe it myself, but it seems at the very least a bit plausible.)

Why is it easier to work in space?

No gravity: makes lifting things (either by hand or with machinery) easier not to mention a lot more freedom of movement and less stresses on supporting the structure.

Look at it this way. On the ground something has to support the ship. It's not exactly built to sit on the ground. Even if you accept that the nacelles are made of a really dense material that balances out the weight of the saucer pushing the center of gravity towards the middle of the structure it's still got a round base. Meaning the thing has to be supported.

Supported by a structure.

Supported by a stucture that has to withstand the weights and forces we're dealing with here.

The parts of the ship also have to be strong enough to support the various components against gravity and even if we accept a "SIF" in place THAT has to be perfect because if it would fail the ship would collapse and crush itself under its own weight.

In space you don't need to battle gravity or the weight of objects and you're not restricted by the limiting concept of "up" and "down."

Again, I can get behind building the various components on the ground, sure, but the whole ship should be assembled in space.
