October Writing Contest

Hey folks, remember a few years ago when we used to do a monthly writing contest? If you don't here's your chance to become familiar with a variety of fan fiction authors and have some creative fun.

Here's how it goes (I think, memory a bit dusty):
I'll start the first "Month's" contest with a topic (related in some way to Star Trek), month is in quotes because we'll go a bit longer than a month this first time. The contest will be open for entries until October 25th, at which time a vote will be taken to determine the winner.

The winner of each month receives (drum roll please) the choice of the next months topic.

So, without further ado, here is the topic and other parameters.

New Beginnings:
Let's set a word goal around 10,000. Shorter or longer will be fine, I just want to get people writing...but let's not go 20,000, OK. People have to read your story, and hopefully a few others, and the idea is not to take away from other writing projects, but to get creativity flowing, and have fun.

Characters can be canon or original characters in the Trek Universe, including mirrors or alternates. The important part here is to show characters who have been out of play for a while getting back into the game somehow. I suppose this means that if you are introducing totally new characters, then some flashbacks are in order, so people can tell the difference between 'then' and 'now.'

Get those keyboards warmed up, ready, set, write!

And, I don't remember if the winner could enter/win, but due to the contest resurrection, I'm going to write something whether it's eligible or not.

You are welcome to post a short synopsis of what you are thinking of writing about to, just to there is some action on the thread before the stories start appearing.

Good Luck!

Now that I think about it, how about including Star Trek villains in the mix, same premise, just a different way of "getting back into the game," i.e. Trellane escaping from his parents, or the Mirror Picard waking after internalizing a lifetime of memories from an alien agonizer probe.

IF they were killed somehow, of course you have to write a hopefully believable "how they survived," segment into the story.

I would like to add my story to the contest but I am not sure what I am supose to do another than say I would like to do it in this thread. It is my Spot story I made not to long ago.

OK, here goes. My entry is "Unexpected Opportunities" . It turned out a bit shorter than I expected, but also had what I wanted in it, although also surprised me a bit how it came out.

It is also a related vignette involving a character from the UT: USS Shepard story Recovery which I am working on finishing. Please DON'T go read it now as it may turn out a bit different in it's full version. *shameless anti-plug*

So, at what time on October 25 does the dedline end? Asking for a friend who's furiously trying to get a story finished with that pesky real life barging in... ;)

I think it would be reasonable to give both friends some extra time. I mean the real purpose of trying to revitalize the contest was to get people writing.

I'd be willing to extend for two additional entries.

Thanks!

I'm almost done. After a bit of polishing I intend to post it tonight my time but that's October 25 in some regions of the world. Hence the question.

Please tell me there'll be a November writing contest. I'm pounding my head against the holodeck wall for not noticing this a month ago! :brickwall:

Looks like all the entries. Nice mix of old guys being co opted back into service and other stories. Now as long as someone remembers how to do the poll, we can vote.

Traditionally, you'd be in charge of the poll, @Dulak - just make a new thread with a poll and links to the stories in the first post. People should have enough time to vote so don't set the period too short.

If you're not feeling up to it I can do it for you.

Would you do it Count Zero? I want to see an example first, been a while since I've done one. Thanks!
