Observation: Nero is a conspiracy theorist trucker

Charles Phipps

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Think about it.

He's a guy objectively wrong about how global warming...err, a supernova destroyed his home planet and immediately defaults to what Romulan propaganda said about Spock and the Federation as using it to conduct a false flag operation against his homeworld.

So he decides to seek completely unwarranted "vengeance."

It's all a motivation that is 100% wrong and a working class guy goes on a shooting spree.

Perhaps not a deliberate parallel but I always liked the fact that the villain is not one of the big epic Senator or mad scientist types.

Nero is one of my personal favorite villains exactly because of this. He is a common, every day guy who was doing his job when something completely unfortunate happen. In his grief, he had to blame someone.

Nero is a lone wolf, feeling the weight of a rage he cannot contain. In many ways, he is like Spock, a dark mirror of what he is capable of. Within the text of the film there are brief moments of reflection of that possibility:

Nero isn't just some mad senator, but a person who illustrates both the terrible consequences of a grief turned in to revenge, as well as the incredible possibility of one of Star Trek's most beloved characters, and one who would recognize the danger in the excess:

Nero is great. Fantastic villain and underappreciated.

Okay, how does this silliness extend to Star Trek Picard, where Jean-Luc left Starfleet and spent many years secluded in his mansion over something "objectively wrong"?

Is Romulus still there? Was Picard's interviewer lying? Why did he relocate all those Romulans?

Nero believes that the Federation blew up his world, not that it didn't blow up.

As for the evacuation being cancelled, that didn't inspire Nero to blow up Vulcan, it was Spock being near the destroyed Sun.

The retcons don't really affect Nero's motivations.

Romulus was destroyed.

Beyond the seat of Romulan empire, hundreds of worlds, maybe thousands, were damaged by extra luminal fallout from the Nova/Red Matter event. So barely explained fake science says that blown up stars shit out death at warp speed, and range for hundreds of light years before they peter out. This was barely explained on screen, it is canon.

Also with out the support or governance of the Imperial seat, politically the Star Empire would break, because no matter how lite or heavy the damage suffered by each colony world, there would be zero humanitarian aid sent from a centralized relief effort, meanwhile every regional governor is going declare themselves king or Emperor and then no one is safe from space pirates because the hundred new governments replacing the Romaulan Star Empire is now just also a pack of space pirates too as there is no unified law book or rule book on how Romulans are supposed to live in the new world order, with zero interest in helping any one else that is probably more than likely now an enemy.
