Obscene T-Shirts: yay or nay?

ETA: Duh, I mixed it up the upper and lower limits with summing a series. (It's been a long time since I did any of this.)

Yeah, that would be:

MathGeek-wrong.jpg

and that would just be silly. :p

(It's been a long time for me, too... my degree is in math, but I haven't done any real math since I got it.)

I think you meant to sum over x, not i?

You guys are making my head explode with all this math.
The highest level of math I completed in school (or know anything about, for that matter,) was Algebra I... and most of the time I just lied to the teacher and said I did my homework when I really didn't. In my experience, math teachers rarely make students hand in homework. Aside from quizzes and tests, I did maybe five math assignments the entire five and a half years (shut up and fuck you) I was in high school...

In short, I don't understand the math jokes either. I suppose I could look stuff up because math is something I pick up fairly easily, but it bores the hell out of me and I'd rather just sit here and be angry about other people trying to make me feel stupid.

Yeah, Algebra I for me too, although this was primarily due to laziness and burnout. After working so hard only to be ignored in favor of cheerleaders and football players by so many teachers, I just said "screw it" and didn't do my homework. I still passed all my classes with flying colors, except for Algebra I, which I had to retake in my last semester my Senior year.

Math curriculums must have changed. I took Algebra 1 in Junior High.

Only Pre-Algebra was available for us in Junior High. Then in high school we could go on to Algebra I, then Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and then Calculus. I got as high as Algebra I. I console myself by keeping in mind that I was in AP Language Arts in 7th grade. Well, except for that brief period where they had me in remedial English thank you very much staff office, but it helps.

Ah, see, for us there was no "as high as you get." You had to take a full 4 years of math to graduate.

Your teachers were probably motivated though.

Motivated to pass their students so they wouldn't have to see them again the following year, maybe.

Sloganed TShirts are like the personalized number plates of 'fashion'. No good can ever really come of them. I do occasionaly see a dude around wearing a Shut up and Fish shirt which I find hilarious for some odd reason (though, obviously not obscene, unless you are vegetarian ?!).

I've taken too many math courses. I agree it's pretty much boring---I'm not one of those who likes math just for the math.

But it does give you a framework for understanding some fairly deep (and far more interesting) algorithms. That's the worthwhile part for me.

The closest to an obscene shirt I have is one that says "Kiss French, Drink Californian" that I picked up at a winery in Napa Valley because I found it amusing at the time. (The fact that we had met some people who knew some people and we all ended up in the back tasting room having quite a party added to the hilarity I'm sure. ;) )

Nowadays my shirts with sayings are limited to the ones I wear to pilates that say things like "Breathe" and "Do good legwork".

Well, that's a step up. I practically taught myself all through high school.
We had somewhere in the rounds of 63 people graduate from a 1,000 person high school.
