O'Brien out, Leno back in?

Of course Leno got better ratings than Conan; his show had been on for fifteen years and had built an audience, plus he had far better lead-ins. Conan's had only been on for barely more than half a year, and he was still building his audience while dealing with a worse lead-in.

NBC's shortsightedness is going to come back to bite them in the ass some day.

Winfrey Have you talked to Conan in person?
Leno I haven’t talked to him through all this. No. I haven’t.
Winfrey Did you want to pick up the phone?
Leno Yeah, but it didn’t seem appropriate.
Winfrey Why?
Leno I don’t know. I think it — let things cool down and maybe we’ll talk, you know.
Winfrey Were any of the things that he said about you hurtful?
Leno No. They were jokes. And that’s okay. I mean –
Winfrey So jokes don’t hurt you.
Leno It’s what we do, you know? You can’t — it’s like being a fighter and say when you got punched in the head, did it hurt? Well, yeah. But you’re a fighter. That’s what you do.

Yeah, but that was my point, really. I know there are good reasons why Conan wasn't pulling the same ratings Leno did. He needed more time, he needed better lead-ins, etc.

But my point was specifically that programming execs are notoriously short-sighted and couldn't care less about any of those reasons. How many promising series have been canceled after 3 or 4 episodes because they didn't generate instant ratings? Hell, if today's programming practices were used years ago, we wouldn't have many of the shows we view as classic today. Many of them took a year or more to build up to their good ratings.

In the end, though, today's attitude is "instant ratings or cancellation." And they're not willing to take anything else into account.

Wow, Leno. Now he's comparing himself to a boxer. Interesting...

Winfrey: "Is there a part of you that feels that you should have just retired?"

Leno: "Well, like I say, for me, being retired seems like a selfish thing to do. Is it a little selfish that I still want to be on TV? Oh, sure."

I know I'm reading way into this with Leno hate, but does it seem like he's saying it's more selfish of him to stay retired and deprive the tv world of Jay Leno then it is for him to want a show?

Sure. Though, one could argue, that he's staying on the air for his staff.

And by staff I mean his...ah, never mind.

Yeah. I think it's ego.

It would be one thing if he changed professions, but it makes zero sense to start a law practice after resigning from the Supreme Court. It's like resigning as president to run for congress. It doesn't make sense.
Well, he didn't resign, but he did run for Congress after his term as President was over... ;)

Teddy Roosevelt set up everything in the Presidency for Taft, and Taft utterly HATED being President. After leaving office, he was quite happy having been appointed to the Supreme Court.

I can understand running for Congress after finishing up your time as president. It's a little whacky, but I understand it. Resigning as a president to run for congress, on the other hand, wouldn't make any sense...just as resigning from the Supreme Court to start a law firm doesn't make much sense...

I watched the interview, and Leno is totally spinning the shit out of everything. He said this all happened because Conan's ratings were bad, when that happens they take you off the air, it's just business, he was offered The Tonight Show, and of course he couldn't turn that down.

Jay...it was your shitty ratings that started all this.

Jay, you had more than a chance to prove yourself when you started, and if they take people off the air for bad ratings after seven months, you would've been gone too.

Jay, what about all that you said about passing the torch and allowing someone else to usher the show, the dynasty, into a new era back in 2004?

Douche bag.

Oh, and now he's talking about how it would be selfish to retire because of his staff? Gee, I have never heard about Jay caring so much about his staff. But, you know...I have heard about how Conan always fights for his staff, and it's one of the things people love him for.

Now Jay's even trying to steal Conan's image.

Douche bag.

Which is a joke when you remember back during the writers strike that Conan was paying his staff from the start of it. Letterman came out and guaranteed his staff and the staff of the late late show that they'd be getting paid. NBC went the opposite direction and Conan was paying his staff out of his own money. Some of the staff on Leno's tonight show then started grumbling and eventually Leno got guilted into doing it as well.

Why not? Someone might be much better at legislating than at serving as the head of an executive branch. They might be happier representing a smaller constituency and using their relationships in a legislature to affect change than trying to navigate the treacherous waters of the Presidency.

Just like someone else might be much happier litigating than judging.
