O'Brien out, Leno back in?

It appears that conan's departure announcement has been held up because of negations for non-contract staff compensation packages.

I read that as well on Yahoo. Massive props to the man for doing as much as he can for his staff.

I got to imagine that some of them are a bit upset that he didn't suck it up and go along with NBC's plan though, just to keep everyone employed...

You know I watched Jay making his case.... I kind of see where he's coming from now. He didn't think he was taking the Tonight Show back, because he was assured Conan would agree to 12:05... so he agreed to the deal then Conan didn't and he was suddenly bound to show up at 11:35 with no host of Tonight....

So it's still a little iffy, but I see where he's coming from there.

Friday's guests have been officially announced. Will Farrell and Tom Hanks. Should be an interesting night for a final show.

Anyone else catch Tom hanks red carpet shot at NBC in the golden globes pre show. "NBC predicted the rain to start at ten but pushed it back to 11:35." Having Tom Hanks on your team is a pretty good standing ground, if you ask me. It seems like a lot of hollywood is siding with Conan over NBC in this whole thing.

That's because Jay is good at looking folksy and straightforward. Read around a bit and you'll see that Jay knew full well what Conan was going to say, because he experienced the exact same thing in 1992 with Carson and Letterman. He's not new to this at all.

You're falling victim to the PR spin, especially when he took the time to specifically say last night, "Don't blame this on Conan," when the entire rational-thinking public isn't blaming Conan. Also, remember that he called out Conan's ratings as being a key issue (even though it was solely Leno's ratings that started this whole mess with the affiliates, bitching that his abortion of a show was scuttling their local news and late-night performance) and it's clear he's trying to twist things to make himself look better.

I still can't get over Leno having the balls to say, "It's just business, if you don't get the ratings, you get removed." As has been repeatedly stated, Conan was consistently beating Letterman in the 18-34 demographics, and the ratings didn't go into utter freefall until Leno premiered. Is "not doing well" to mean that Conan's ratings weren't as high as Leno's in 2008? So, what, was Leno as successful as Carson in his first year?

Whether he's being dishonest or he's actually delusional enough to believe his own damage control ramblings, I couldn't say. But either way, he's wrong, and I hope someone publicly calls him out on it.

I'd believe this, but it's hard to imagine that if Leno was really concerned about how Conan would react to this he would trust the NBC exec (or whomever it was) rather than call Conan up to hear it from him before signing on the dotted line.

Jay Leno is a goddamn twat of an evil mastermind.

He'll start spinning all this to middle America, and they'll love him for it.

Cause their idiots.

If they believed WMD in Iraq and then "it's all about freedom" when they didn't find any, they'll believe Jay's bullshit.

Or, you would think that upon finding out that, no, in fact, Conan was not amenable to this plan and was furious at being blindsided, that he'd try expressing some measure of displeasure to NBC, rather than saying, "Oh, he's pissed off? OK, well, I'll take his show anyway. Cool."

Even worse is now NBC that is scrambling to develop quality programming for the 10 p.m. slot, with mainstays like Law & Order sitting there for now, NBC will have that plus the two-week Olympic period to promote the shit out of Leno and the Tonight Show, which is backing that Conan never had. He merely had Leno cutting him off at the knees at 10 p.m. And then NBC will be able to say, "Hey, look, the Tonight Show's ratings are back up, we were right all along: Conan couldn't hack it."

And then I will bomb 30 Rockefeller Center.

it is even more laughable to hear jay talking about ratings..

as much to hear seinfeld going on about it..
yeah a show should be canned if their ratings are not great after a short period of time.
;)

i bet this whole thing is just pissing off the affiliates even more.
not only did jay screw them with his non prime time ratings and horrible lead in.
now he is going to be bringing so so demographics.

i wouldnt be suprised if by this time next year there is another revolt among them after letterman and conan take in the prize demographics.

:p

What Chin should have said was, "If Conan is okay with it, then I am too."

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Yeah Jay has a healthy ego and wanted the Tonight Show back, but I also believe he was genuinely concerned about keeping his staff employed and willing to do whatever he could to make that happen.

I don't buy the idea that he had a hand in orchestrating the entire thing; my impression is he's just one of these guys who goes where he's told and doesn't ask too many questions.

If Conan is so big with the younger, hipper, not-watching-Tv audience then maybe putting him on an expensive exclusive cable network that not everyone has is not the best solution.

Remember... downloads don't actually "count" as "viewers" paying the bills. ;)

It does if you are a Stargate fan.

:D

Possibly the Fox network as well. If memory serves, one of the reasons Terminator got a full second season is because the online viewings were very strong when the season started. All viewings fell off towards the end, thereby canceling it.

^ I think Jay views himself as trying to be a "good soldier" in all of this. He's trying to do what NBC wants. He didn't want to leave The Tonight Show, but he did 'cause NBC said so. He didn't want to move to 10 pm, but he did 'cause NBC said so. He feels bad that he didn't perform for NBC at 10 pm, and he was under a 2-year contract, so he feels even more obligated to do what they want, even if that means bumping Conan in the process.

I know everyone around her wants to throw vitriol at Leno, but I still don't think he's the bad guy in all of this. I agree he should decline The Tonight Show if it means Conan is out of a job. But I don't think his agreeing to take it is some sign of an underhanded motive or a desire to screw Conan or anything like that. I think he just sees it as "well, NBC is going to can Conan regardless, and I have a duty to go where they ask me to."

BTW, a quick WHOIS search reveals that conanonfox.com is indeed registered to Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. So it appears legitimate. What the reason for the registration is, though, I suppose we'll have to wait and see...

NBC was rocking with Jay Leno...what will be the fate of NBC only God knows...wait for it!!!!!:confused::confused:

OH MY GOD, watch Letterman's desk segment - totally serious takedown of Jay

"he said that we should not blame Conan for what's going on.......... and I said to myself................. no one is blaming Conan!"

He spent almost five minutes on the "Don't blame Conan!" comment.

Wow is it gonna suck when this whole debacle calms down. late night is more entertaining than it's been in years.
