O'Brien out, Leno back in?

I liked the carrying over of bits from Letterman to Craig tonight. Dave said "up next, I think it's C.F." then Craig starts obsessing and yells "Dave, I've always been loyal to you!"

Oh, Craig was on fire tonight. I loved his opening bit.

I like the idea of putting Jay back on 11:35,:techman: I haven't The Tonight Show since Conan took over the show. Since, Conan took over The Tonight Show, the show has LOST to David Letterman on a regular basis. The Tonight Show:) before Conon had always won the time shot for NBC. The entire decision was a REALLY BAD MOVE:mad: for the NBC Network.:brickwall:
I guess you're forgetting the early years of Leno's tenure on The Tonight Show, where he regularly finished behind Letterman. It wasn't until around 1995 or 1996 that Leno finally pulled out ahead. And yet NBC stood behind both Leno and Conan as the latter floundered through the initial years of his tenure on Late Night.

NBC is apparently run by incompetent fucks who can't find their own asses with a map and a flashlight. You're right that this was a bad move, but you're right for the wrong reason.

edit: Or, hey, even better... let's rewind this back to 1992, just after Johnny Carson left...

See how easy that was? :p

Well, aparently Leno is unhappy that he's getting lumped into the NBC bad guy press and is looking to leave the network...
Yeah right. If Leno really cared he would have never played with a prime time show and straight-up said 'no' to moving to The Tonight Show's time slot.

There were rumbling of this months ago. Last November when Leno was asked if he'd take back The Tonight Show he said:

If it were offered to me, would I take it? If that’s what they wanted to do, sure. That would be fine if they wanted to.

To which Andy Richter summed up perfectly:

That was a weird answer. Because nobody actually asked him if it was offered, the question was just sort of like, would you like to be back on? And he was the one who went on to say, “If they asked me, would I take it?” That’s certainly not the classy answer to that question. The classy answer is, “Oh, well that’s a silly question to ask because somebody already has that job.” That’s what you say if you’re classy.

This is all just damage control by Leno.

^Leno can go fuck himself for all I care. He had his time in the big chair, now it's Conan's turn. NBC should have had the foresight to let either Jay or Conan leave the network back when Conan started making noises about wanting to host The Tonight Show. Instead they tried to have their cake and eat it too, and they're just looking like the morons they are.

But if Leno gets his old gig back — either this half-hour crap, or returns to hosting The Tonight Show, you can bet I won't watch. Even if his first guest was Jesus Christ coming to announce the Rapture, I still wouldn't watch. I'm not exaggerating, either.

I'll comment on this as well, because I can't leave well enough alone.

The Jay Leno Show at 10:00 has much lower ratings than normal primetime shows. This has caused the news casts following to have much lower ratings as well. The affiliates complained at this, apparently bringing about the situation we are in today.

Can't you see how having a similar show on the network earlier in the night, as well as much decreased ratings for the lead-ins and the network as a whole might be to blame for some of the decreased ratings that The Tonight Show is currently experiencing? :wtf:

Right on the money.

The poor lead in was apparently causing a loss of $570k a week for local news. I'd sure as hell complain too if I was an affiliate.

The funny part is NBC knew the ratings would be poor. They just liked that The Jay Leno Show was cheap to make. As another commentator put it, if that's not an admittance of executive incompetence nothing is (apparently Zucker's big love is margin over ratings and - surprise! - NBC's ratings are now in the shitter).

I'm sure Jay Leno can and will dominate late night when he moves back to 11:30. He didn't seem to have any problem bringing his audience with him to prime time. But Leno's audience is aging and killing Conan in his critical audience building period is just insane. It's incredibly short-sighted.

Yea Zucker really didn't think things through, but the affiliates did. Some of them were complaining about Jay Leno getting 10PM before it even aired because of the lower ratings it would mean. Zucker figured NBC would make money because they'd be saving so much on the cost of budgets of whatever dramas they'd need at 10PM that even though those dramas would likely get better ratings it would still be a net gain for NBC.

He didn't think things through enough and realize that horrible ratings at 10pm would lead to an exodus from the 11pm local news which in turn would lead to a lower lead-in audience for the Tonight Show.

The idiot was still even saying "We were making money on Jay Leno @ 10PM" yea they were making money and losing it because of the damage the ratings did to the rest of the night on NBC.

It's like cleaning out your garage and throwing all the useless shit from it into the rest of your house, cluttering your living room, dining room, closets, etc... and then saying "Hey my garage is clean!" Guess what? The rest of your house is now a cluttered fucking mess.

That's Zucker's NBC.

Word. :techman:

Honestly, at this point if I were Jay Leno I'd feel really bad about returning to The Tonight Show after all of this.

I saw Jimmy Fallon's comments on the matter, and y'know, I thought they were pretty mature.

I'm curious, too. If NBC decides to stick with Conan and he agrees, I wonder if this will be his Hugh Grant.

Apart of me is really hoping that all of this attention will make NBC realize it's mistake...even if it's just a PR problem, and they decide to keep Conan. Somehow, for some reason, that would make me feel good, that good and right things can happen.

(I know, it's a TV, when there's real problems in the world, why am I pinning my hopes on this--maybe because it's actually and easy fix.)

But, I know, it's really done, it's just a question of when.

I'm still with Coco though.

I think it's time to move Jimmy Fallon to the Tonight Show desk.

Ha.

His monolouges are horrible.

I did like the Head Swap bit.

That was all I watched.

That comedienne on Conan was irritating.
