O'Brien out, Leno back in?

Apparently CBS does put the monologue of the show on it's site before the west coast airing. I was able to get it before hand. Conan was funny but I think I expected a bit more. What was comic gold though, surprisingly, was Jimmy Kimmel when he brought out Chevy Chase. I was cracking up.

I don't know, Conan seems to be more of the old late night conan... I think he's got a "what are they going to do, fire me" attitude at this point and starting to push the envelope on things a little and getting a little more free and crazy.

I never watched the late night show when Conan was hosting, but it did seem tonight's show was a bit more grotesque than usual, especially the "ho" gag.

Some of them seem to be having a whole lot of fun with this. I hope that NBC will back up Conan. He's earned their support. Leno is funny, but it's time for him to take a more seasonal position. He could be extremely useful to NBC to have Leno Specials in Primetime during sweeps.

As for what's going on at the moment, NBC has made a mess of things pretty consistently ever since the good ole days of West Wing, Frasier, Seinfeld and others ended.

I think Comcast should ask for their money back.

I think Conan should have sucked it up and taken the half-hour hit. He gets paid boat-loads of money, and this public battle is just plain unprofessional.

There's nothing unprofessional about it. He spells it out in his letter - the Tonight Show is not the Tonight Show if it airs after midnight. It would indeed be destroying a show that has been a post-evening-news institution for 60 years almost. But then again people seem to be all about tearing down institutions these days, so what do I know.

And a lot of people seem to be ignoring the fact that Jay Leno's new show sucked. If he just moves it to 11:30 it'll still suck and that'll further erode the ratings for Tonight.

The only honorable thing here is that it's time for Leno to retire. Either that or follow the lead of Bob Hope and do seasonal specials for NBC. It's the only way I can see Tonight Show, Late Night and Leno coming out of this.

It's unprofessional to oppose the Tonight Show brand being destroyed and to object at being disrespected by his network after he uprooted his entire life to move to California? It's unprofessional to object to his network essentially breaking its promises about his professional future from six years ago?

Is it unprofessional to object when your boss screws you over?

I think NBC should have sucked it up and realized that Leno has run his course and that Conan needed extra time to establish his audience. They're the ones being unprofessional by reacting the way they are.

From what I've seen, it's the public that's turning it into a tantrum, not Conan. He's actually been fairly reasonable considering how much he's getting fucked over.

It's unprofessional to turn a contract dispute into a public tantrum.

Which he has not done. If you read his letter, it's eminently reasonable and quite classy. He's mined the dispute for comedy, certainly -- but, frankly, Craig Ferguson has been far harsher on NBC than Conan has.

Exactly. Conan has handled this with style. Hell, even Tom Brokaw said Conan has every right to be pissed. And he does.

O'brien should just move to FOX. O'brien would be going to a network that skewers younger, which was the reason NBC decided to make this switch five Fing years ago.

Let Leno/Letterman attract the older demos...

Rob

Sounds like that's likely to be the result, unless NBC reverses itself again and gives in to Conan by dumping Leno.

Rumor was that Fox was willing to offer Conan a deal like Letterman has, where Conan's production company would get to produce a show to follow his own latenight show, so it would be a pretty sweet deal, and pretty much tank whatever NBC is trying for. If Leno wasn't funny at 10, not sure how putting him back to 11:30 will magically fix it all. He's lost a lot of his prestige over this...

Because NBC backing out of their end of an agreement to keep Conan on their network back in 2004 when he could've moved for more money elsewhere is all Conan's fault.

Leno agreed to leave the Tonight Show as part of this agreement as well, yet Conan should be the one sucking it up to appease him.

Yup, that makes PERFECT sense. :wtf:

The ONLY way this even remotely becomes Conan's fault is if he had some sort of ratings clause in his contract and wasn't meeting it, and decided to make a fuss about being replaced.

The big thing I heard this morning on the radio was that, while Conan's contract was indeed for The Tonight Show, is contract did not include anything about a specific timeslot for the show to air.

The timeslot for The Tonight Show is one of those unwritten rules. It should be understood what time it is to air and not have to be defined.
