O'Brien out, Leno back in?

TMZ is reporting there are changes a foot at NBC...

...so it may all be rumor...but still...

We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

Neither Conan nor Leno has been a ratings winner in their slot...so, it doesn't surprise me.

While, I think it would be kick ass to lose Leno at 10 pm, I would hate to see Conan go...

...but then...I'm more likely to watch Stewart and Colbert...

That's not what Zap2It is reporting. Although NBC is denying, there's some pretty highly placed sources suggesting NBC might just use the Olympics hiatus to quietly shelve the Leno show altogether:

They won't replace O'Brien with Leno. First, O'Brien is starting to build is audience. Second, NBC would have to pay him millions in a contract buy-out. It's just not feasible. And you can't compare ratings for a prime-time show and a late-night show. They're completely different animals. A late-night show is doing well if it gets a few million people watching; a prime-time show that gets those numbers usually gets canned quickly. (Keep an eye on Ugly Betty...) Thirdly, after the much-publicized hand-over last spring, if NBC suddenly changes its mind it'll look like an ass -- and, worse yet, the longest-running entertainment program on Earth could die as a consequence.

A more likely scenario is that Leno will go away for a bit and come back with another show (assuming he stays with NBC) which will hopefully not be the cannonball (in terms of destruction to other shows like Southland) that the 5-night-a-week Leno show has been.

One thing to watch for is whether NBC affiliates start to bail. We saw the threats of this last summer, but if enough stations decide to, say, put on first-run syndicated shows or expand their evening newscasts, NBC wouldn't be able to do much about it.

How could NBC get rid of Leno at 9 pm now? They'd have to find something to fill 5 hours of primetime. I could see it happening before the fall season starts, but Feb. would be a horrible time to do it.

I also remember hearing that NBC contracted Leno out for like the first three years or something, so if they canned it now, they'd have to buy Leno out of his contract.

Damn! Missed it by a week. When the Leno 10pm thing started, I said it'd be gone by the end of '09. Oh, well.

I don't have time to look for a source, but I think NBC signed Leno up for two years. If they canned the show after one, then at least they'd only be paying for one year. I guess things could be worse.

I am curious to know what NBC would air at 10pm if they really decided to bail on Leno after the Olympics. As far as I know, the network doesn't have a plethora of mid-season replacements lined up since they weren't expecting to have to replace Leno. It might be smarter to just keep Leno at 10pm for the rest of the season and then cancel the show. Prep the new fall schedule with new series.

Didn't they just order something like 17 pilots for next season?

Leno should just stick to making Dorito's commercials. I would buy that entire series on DVD and supplement it with shoddy fanfic.

What I heard is Leno back to 11:35, but only half and hour, and Conan at 12:05 for an hour. That wouldnt so SO bad, but still... uhg.

If they want to do that, they should do Leno at 11:00-11:35, and keep Conan as is

Is the person who came up with the idea to take Leno out of his dominant time slot and put him in primetime going to get fired?

Why do none of these articles mention little Jimmy Fallon? I stopped following this all back in September- how is Fallon doing? Is there a chance they'll cancel Fallon and go back to the old Leno/Conan pairing?

Ah, late night t.v., for the retired and unemployed.

Like daytime soap operas, it makes me wonder why they even fund first run programming at such hours. I mean, is it to keep Jimmy Fallon from wandering the street?

NBC is stupid. If they just keep things the way they are for atleast 3 years...take the hit(if ratings don't improve) then do something...networks don't give shows enough time...am I saying Leno show is good??? It is pretty much the same show just no one is watching a show like that at 10pm...they should get rid of Carson Daly...I hate him...put Leno on in his slot.
