Spoilers 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' series [Spoiler Discussion]

It’s pointless. You’re seeing something that isn’t there. Read the article

OMG, the article is irrelevant. I read it and I've heard the story about the late addition many times. That doesn't make a whit of difference. Get over it. LOTS of things in movies were late additions or weren't planned from the start. The entire Death Star assault in ANH was entirely reworked in the editing room. Does it not "count" somehow, in your estimation? Something can't have value because it was a "late addition?" What an absurd notion.

Will Disney start charging a dollar to watch the end credits without interruption? Makes one want to sail the high seas to watch the show.

I'm liking the show a lot, so this is a joking gripe...

There continues to be an odd manner of showing people stymied by the smallest of obstacles. First it was Leia's pursuers stopped by a few branches, this ep had Obi-Wan struggling to open a laser-gate that could easily have been walked around, and bad guys not being able to follow good guys because of some localized flames. It's vaguely comical, yo.
I was a little surprised that he didn't use it for the vehicle and just walked through. I guess it's like a video game where you can't climb over a curb because your character doesn't have a jump move.

Vader lost Kenobi because the woman had the high ground.
So Kenobi has a brother? Bob Kenobi? That better pay off later down the line
Toby. Toby Kenobi.

It just isn't important to the movie's story. If you removed Vader and just had a squad of troopers chasing the rebels with the plans, nothing would have changed story wise. If you removed that completely and just saw Leia receiving the plans and jumping out, nothing would have changed in the story.

Vader being there isn't central to the story at all. The rebels getting away with the plans is the important part.

I said in my previous post with the article that I loved the Vader scene.

That gate scene was funny. Trying to disable it when he could have just walked around it. :)

It was obvious that Vader was letting Obi Wan escape to prolong his "suffering." Vader literally extinguished the fire himself moments earlier, he could have easily done the same.
Yeah, Vader could have easily stopped the fire again and crushed the loader droid rescuing Kenobi with just one hand. But when the camera focused on Vader's mask, I dunno, there's a part of me that thinks for that one brief moment, it was Anakin and not Vader that allowed Kenobi to get away.

Vader's presence heightens the urgency and danger of the scene. It elevates the scene and therefore strongly buttresses the themes of the movie. I never said it was "essential to the story", rather that it is hugely consequential thematically.

I think we've gone around in circles on this. To you, it's a fun, but meaningless scene. To me, it's a fun, deeply resonant scene which makes the movie better on multiple levels, thematic as well as visceral.

Agree to disagree here.

Yes, he could have. But his solution was faster. It took 2 seconds.

That's an interesting read! Maybe! To me, it was just Vader messing with him.

Yeah I thought exactly the same thing when I saw how the security checkpoint was laid out. People are saying it was quicker for him to take the gate down when I honestly it would have been quicker for him and lasted just run around it.

Enjoying it so far.

1. I have no beef with the kid actor, but the Disney-Princess smart-aleckiness of young Leia is grating upon me heavily. She does have some good moments as well, though.

2. Enjoyed the convo between Ben and Leia in the back of Freck's speeder. First time we've ever heard Obi-wan mention his birth family, or see a sense of regret that he never knew them.

3. I'm not sure what the sound engineers did here, but James Earl Jones' Vader voice sounds fecking AWESOME.

4. I got the distinct impression Vader was toying with Obi-wan a bit during the saber fight- an impression that was reinforced when he let him get away in the end. This is now a game of cat and mouse for Vader. Obi-wan's suffering has just begun. No wonder old Ben Kenobi looks rode hard and put-up-wet in ANH!!

5. Reva has Leia. I wonder if she'll somehow detect that she's Force-sensitive. They do breach the topic of Force-sensitive children and how the Empire disappears them in this episode.

6. Indira Varma! :adore:

Good stuff halfway in.

I agree that Jones' voice sounds much more powerful and less aged than it did in "Rogue One." Sadly, the process you refer to with Mark Hamill isn't an "AI filter." They literally use sound bytes to create his vocal performance entirely in a computer.

There's literally zero of Mark Hamill's voice in his Mandalorian "appearances." Which strikes me as very sad. Surely there were other methods available that may not have sounded perfect, but would at least have allowed Hamill himself to actually "be" in the show.
In the Behind the Scenes they used old-Mark Hamil's voice performance as a base to overlay the AI voice.
Not quite the same but still cool.
I finally watched all 3 episodes; I'm not really sure what to think. I enjoyed it but I think I need to give it another watch

Do we know if Jones actually recorded the lines for this or if it's digitally recreated, ala Hamill's in Mando? Jones did sound aged in Rogue One, so it would make sense. I'm old enough to remember when Sean Connery recorded vocal for a "From Russia with Love" video game way back when. While his voice was still as strong, it was obvious that it was older Connery and I found it quite distracting from the game.

But, yeah, as you said, the voice is all AI. It's based on old recordings, but modern-day Mark isn't in there. Which bums me out. Surely, they could have found a way to slightly clean up his gravel, even if it wasn't a perfect match.

After all, there's no way Luke didn't adopt a 2-pack a day habit after the stress of ROTJ.

At this point this seems to be quibbling, given that the majority of Anakin Skywalker's vocal appearances, in the Clone Wars cartoon, are voiced by Matt Lanter who doesn't sound anything like Hayden. The AI recreated voices in these live action shows are nothing compared to the extreme vocal dissonance the Clone Wars cartoon brings (only Dooku sounds like himself, so much so that it's said the late Sir Christopher Lee was astounded by Corey Burton's vocal similarity)

It's an entirely different situation.

Yeah, but it probably would feel too much off. An Autotune can only do so much. Using AI to match the inflection is pretty cool.

Head-cannon accepted
