The talking head on the radio today made a comment about how he had heard that president obama has requested an advanced screening of this film at the white house...

Was he full of shit or is this a real thing?:vulcan:

They say Obama is something of a Trekkie. But I don't know if this is true. But I mean, being the President gotta have its perks. I know I would give an order to get me the film before everyone else if I were him... ;)

Neither and not uncommon.

Presidents often get to see movies early, as they have to be screened at the White House thanks to security concerns (and more than one sitting president has HATED this fact because it makes "going to the movies" impossible)

And Obama is a known Trekkie. He gave the Vulcan salute to Nimoy while on the campaign trail and has referred to Trek, Star Wars, and other sci fi movies and books numerous times in his speeches.

I don't think it's in the purview of Executive Privilege to issue a Presidential Order for an advanced screening of the latest star Trek film. :guffaw:

He could always just ask. ;)

Not for nothing, but this could be a real boon to the movie. With his still very high popularity and people out there who hang on his every word, there could be millions of people who will just go to see this because he's excited about it.

Leonard Nimoy on NPR last year said he was at a Chicago Democratic fundraiser before Obama ran for President and Obama noticed Nimoy and gave the Vulcan salute to him.

Oh and one point Newsweek said that Obama thought his wife's belt looked like a star trek communicator and shouted into her belt something about dilithium crystals.

The fact he knows what a Dlithium Crystal is is pretty good 'Trek cred I'd say.

Oh and if your wondering, yes the White House ha a screening room built like a old time movie theater by GWB in his first term.

Is there an echo in here?

It's not really big thread yet, Cheebo. Read the prior posts first, big guy. ;)

Oops! Well I had the second story about Obama mentioning Dilithium Crystals at least. ;)

Ehh so whats the big deal? he wants to see TREK without the hassle of going to a movie theater, I dont blame him, if I had my choice I'd see this movie at home too!(being president sure has some perks!)

Obama is indeed a Trekkie. Right now he's contemplating if he wants to use his free assassination passes on Berman and Braga.

The screening room has been there longer than that. On the commentary of Independence Day, the producers talk about the surreality of watching all the scenes set in the White House in the actual White House, with the actual President sitting behind them.

He's our first geek president, that's what! We've had heroes and generals and cowboys and dorks (big difference) and crooks and jocks and actors and playboys as presidents... but never a geek. Qapla!

That would be bizzarro! If it was my movie, I'd have to ask for a screening in the War Room.. but only if the War Room looks like it did in Dr Strangelove. :)

John Kennedy's casual mention that he enjoyed Fleming's "James Bond" novels did a lot for them in the United States. Given the current high popularity of our President, this kind of interest could do nothing but help Trek.

Select members of the house, the senate and the Pentagon were invited to the White House to screen top secret footage of a UFO recovery operation in Antarctica as well as 10 minutes of the next Star Trek movie. Then Leonard Nimoy showed up and asked everyone if they'd rather watch the whole Star Trek movie instead.
