Series showrunner Steven Moffat revealed that there'll be at "minimum" another five years of Doctor Who. Speaking to Doctor Who magazine and quoted by the Radio Times, Moffat laid out the long-term plans for the show: “I thought it would last ten years. I didn’t think it would last ten years with BBC Worldwide trying to get me in a room to talk about their plan for the next five years!”

Just hopefully not with him at the helm.

Sounds like they have time for one more Doc and maybe a pre-planned wrap-up. Maybe culminating with a story featuring all the modern Docs? Would be nice.

He's not saying it will end in 5 years. He means it'll at least be successful for 5 more years. The BBC has said they'd love for it to last as long as possible.

Didn't he say this year (Or was it next year?) will be his last? Or am I remembering an "At Least..." Quote incorrectly

The only real indication Moffat has ever given regarding when he might step down was in 2013 when asked the question he gave a vague response indicating he believes he's "past the half-way point in his term." Taken literally this means he doesn't plan on stepping down any earlier than 2016.

In early 2013, Moffat said that he was "nearer the end than the beginning" of his time on Doctor Who.

At that point he had been with the show for roughly four years, so it wouldn't have been unreasonable to assume that he meant he was leaving in two or three years. In other words, at the time he was hinting at the 2015-6 time frame.

On the other hand, he's said things about Capaldi rejuvenating him creatively, so his 2013 "nearer the end" may no longer hold.

Oh, OK, I thought I remembered him saying something in the past few months (No more than 6 months ago)

The show has improved by leaps and bounds in overall quality and polish since the early years. I watch some of the early seasons on Netflix from the RTD era and it's shocking how far they've come stylistically and thematically. I'm of the opinion that Moffat isn't as clever as he thinks he is, but he has been good for the show.

Now he just needs to quietly step aside and give someone else a shot. I'd love to see a fresh creative voice take over for series 10-12.

This. I haven't always been bowled over by Moffat's plots. Season 5 was absolute perfection but Seasons 6 & 7 were overly convoluted in their timey-wimey-ness and their over-reliance on mysteries that aren't nearly so interesting when re-watching.

However, I much prefer Moffat's take on characterization. I like that his Doctors have been substantially less romantic and his companions substantially less whiny & moonstruck. And the overall tone of the series has become less maudlin & more engaging.

I think the reason why I prefer Moffat over Davies really boils down to this: Moffat was a sitcom writer and Davies was a soap opera writer. So even when the alien-of-the-week plot isn't particularly working, the show is still side-splittingly funny (SEE "The Lodger," "Closing Time," "The Power of Three," "The Caretaker," & even "The Doctor, the Widow, & the Wardrobe").

Moffat writes good stand alones but his story arc work is terrible. Season Five was ok but everything since then hasn't worked very well at all. I think I gave up in season six and skipped several episodes.

From my very similar thread titled: Doctor Who - The Future And A Female Doctor

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Steven+Moffat+says+Doctor+Who+will+go+at+5+more+years

I came across an article on my cell phone about what Steven Moffat say about the future of Doctor Who and the Doctor ever being a woman. I searched for it on my computer. The above link are all the results I got. All of them are about what Moffat said about Doctor Who's future and the Doctor ever being a woman. Might find the 2 below the most interesting of the search results.

While it's good to hear that there is a long future for the show I'm not sure it's good that those in charge feel so safe and comfortable. Hopefully that means the security to try new things and be ambitious and not a call to complacency and half-assed execution.

Sorry, but I am a hater and will not accept a female doctor.

This gender bender thing is out of hand already.

So now comes the part where people get all hot and bothered now that I've come out and admit that I'm a hater.

But I'll just twerk it off.

Because players got play play play
And the fakers gotta fake fake fake fake
Just gotta shake it off, shake it off.

WOO HOO!

Given your performance here and in other place, it seems an infraction for trolling is in order. Comments to PM.

I'd settle for the show making sense and not being dumbed down so much. There are some Classic Who shows I've seen over a dozen times.

There are very few nuWho shows I've been able to stand even once. For me, it's been pretty unwatchable since Tennant left.

I'm just going to point out that, given the quote, the "Hollywood Reporter" um, reporter, has jumped to conclusions--at least the way I read it. Yes, it is great that the BBS would be talking with Moffat about the plan for "Dr. Who" for the next 5 years, but that isn't the same thing as saying "we're going to show 'Dr. Who' for the next 5 years--guaranteed."

Plans are just that--plans. If you go into your annual employee review and the boss asks you to go over your plan with the company for the next 5 years, that doesn't mean you can now screw off and surf TBBS all day at work. Heck, it wouldn't be unexpected in a job interview to be asked what your plan for the next 5 years is. That doesn't mean you've got the job. Heck, if the BBC didn't like Moffat's answer, that might mean they were now more likely to cancel the show.

Now there may have been more conversation that supports that take on events, but based on the quote in the initial post, there was no reason for the reporter to draw that conclusion.
