Number One's Uniform/Hairstyle & sequence of events

MarsWeeps

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
What can we determine based on the different uniforms & hairstyles of Commander Burnham?

1) She starts out in Command Gold on the Shenzhou
2) After some incident where she "screws up" she's busted and then recruited by Captain Lorca of the Discovery. At this time she wears Science Silver (maybe Science Officer) - although I don't see any Insignia Pin
3) She redeems herself and is promoted back to Command Gold

Some facts, some speculation. I'm curious to see how this plays out and if the changes take place over the course of 15 episodes. I just hope it's nothing like Star Trek Into Darkness where Kirk is Captain, sent back to the Academy, promoted to First Officer and then back to Captain again, all within a space of 10 minutes.

I read that title and thought this was going to be another Prime or Kelvin type thread.

I'm not 100% convinced on the silver thing, I think it might be a trick of the light. The division colours aren't all that distinctive in the darker shots.

I wonder why she decided to change her hair.

Was it a production decision or actor decision?

Could be a just a visual to separate events. Straight hair is early in her career (Shenzhou), curly hair is Discovery era. If they use a lot of flashback sequences, it could be an easy way to keep track.

Hey, she can smile.

Other than the shot of the cast clowning around on the transporter platform, that the first I've seen a smile from her.

Why so serious?

Probably because that's a picture taken during an interview and not a shot from an episode. I don't think she has a whole lot to smile about during the early episodes...after starting a war with the Klingons and all that. ;)

I think she just changed her hair because she could. We may see Burnham go back and forth with different hairstyles--straight or her default curly--during the run of the series.

Maybe she could be bald one episode and sound like she's talking through a toilet paper tube. A sort of prequel V'ger vibe.

Nope, JJ n Orchi aren't writting this show so no chance that farce plays out again LOL

The bottom image is from Entertainment weekly but she is sitting in a director's chair which is obvious she is doing press junket EPK style interviews. Notice how flat the lighting is on her face too.

a la Sliding Doors (which is a really good film, BTW).
However, they were not "flashbacks" in Sliding Doors, but rather an alternate series of events.

I'm not really seeing much with the hair. How many times does someone straighten their hair only for it to completely curl up with one tiny drop of sweat or rain?

All I see is straightened hair for a morning shift, curled hair after an hour of running away from a Klingon or vindaloo-based mutant.

Based on the experience of Voyager, the lead's hair will have been a big deal. We're all distracted by Klingons and starships and forgetting the real issues.

Actually the Lead's hair has been one of those silly "things" all the way through the franchise.

Brookes seemingly endlessly tried to get the producers to shave Sisko's hair. I think that was mostly down to the fact that Avery just likes his hair around his lips, but I recall reading he was much happier post S4

They tried a few wigs for Stewart in early tests and thankfully realised that some people just don't wear hair well.

The Shat of course bought out all the Elmer's glue stocks in California to keep "it all straight" through he endless fisticuffs with rubber monsters and Klingons

Allegedly even poor Bakula got harassed by the studio to have his hair changed so he'd look younger. As if being lumbered with those scripts wasn't bad enough.

So, yeah, Studios LOVE messing with hair. And why not, it's fun!

SMG better get used to the studio "notes" about her styling.

Though imagine their faces if she strutted onto set after the season break and did something like this with a prop phaser...

Trek does Blaxploitation!

Hugo - has none "up there"

I don't think that interview picture means she was promoted back to gold anytime soon. That interview is while doing promotional cover shoots.
