Number One

I like what IDW comics have done with her. Number One eventually went on to command her own Constitution-class starship and was a commodore during TOS and an admiral by the time of TMP.

After leaving the Enterprise, she was no longer addressed as Number One, but just by her rank at all times (we never did learn her real name).

Read the New Frontier novels. Her name is revealed there.

Yeah, yeah, I know, novels aren't canon, but I don't care.....
I like the idea that her real name is never officially given, so it's a moot point.

In the novel "The Vulcan's Heart" she was from an alien world that practiced genetic engineering and her name actually was Number One, as she was the best of the best of her 'batch'.

I quite like the idea of her being a human-looking alien, though never finding out her name or where she comes from.

But if TOS had continued with "The Cage" cast, we eventually would have. you only have to look at Riker to know what "Number One" really means. It's obvious that Pike was using it the same way Picard was.

...was it ever written or implied somewhere that Spock had been in contact with the Talosians...

Near the end of "The Menagerie Part II" when The Keeper is communicating with Kirk, he says "Mr. Spock had related to us your strength of will..." indicating that the Talosian's scheme to get Captain Pike back had been planned out well in advance, most likely with Spock's help.

Ah if only it had...

Anyways, I just like the possibility that there was more to her than meets the eye.

The problem isn't if the novels are canonical, the problem is that the New Frontier series is badly written crap.

Well, I can't speak to that since I've only read the first four so far, but I was just trying to head off another pointless canon debate before my comment started one.

The Talosians brought her back before Pike, and gave her the illusion that she was Vina.

And that, of course, was a problem with the conceptualization of the character from the start. Captain Pike’s First Officer was written as a mystery woman. That’s fine for a pilot and perhaps the first few episodes of a series, but sooner or later the audience is going to want to know something about this character. Like her name, f’rinstance. And maybe a bit of background.

So, what is it?

Please don’t say it’s Susan Hilton.

She's the mom of Wesley's old girlfriend, Robin Lefler. Her name is Morgan. In the Pike era novel of the CAPTAIN'S TABLE series, Pike even refers to her as "Lt. Commander Lefler".

I like how John Byrne handled it in the IDW comics, imply that she does have a proper name, but never quite get around to actually saying it...

This wasn't intended to be a discussion around the canon-inity of the books, but rather what do you think she got up to after "The Cage".

Did she retire and raise a family? Was she drafted into Starfleet Intelligence? Did she become the Federation President?

The same could also be applied to Tyler, Colt and Boyce.
