Number One

Bry_Sinclair

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Anyone got any thoughts on what happened to Pike's beautiful and enigmatic Number One?

Why wasn't she given command of the Enterprise?

In my head, I have it that she was promoted to Captain of the U.S.S. Miranda, and assigned on a very deep-space mission (which is why Pike went to Spock and not her for help to get back to Talos).

Either that or:

Just after Pike's second tour, she encountered a temporal anomaly that pulled her through to the 2370s (thus freeing her up for me to use in a 'modern' project). Maybe with Jose Tyler and Yeoman Colt, but not essential.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

Actually it was her identical-looking cousin who became a nurse. (Hey, it worked for Patty Duke.)

She was mortally wounded and her consciousness was downloaded into the ship's computer.

I like what IDW comics have done with her. Number One eventually went on to command her own Constitution-class starship and was a commodore during TOS and an admiral by the time of TMP.

After leaving the Enterprise, she was no longer addressed as Number One, but just by her rank at all times (we never did learn her real name).

In my head, shes got a completely different personality. The mindmeld she had with the logical Spock in the previous (unseen) episode is still effecting her, and Spock :D

...Pike went to Spock and not her for help to get back to Talos...

It was the other way around. Spock kidnapped Pike...he didn't want to go to Talos IV, at least not at first. He had to be convinced by the viewscreen images just like everyone else.

As for what happened to Number One...she retired from Starfleet and got a job recording celebrity voices for GPS navigation systems.

^ I agree- it was definitely not Pike's idea/plan to go back to Talos IV. But- was it ever written or implied somewhere that Spock had been in contact with the Talosians about this plan before his hijacking of the Enterprise, or did Spock just assume that when the ship got close to Talos IV, the Talosians would read minds and know what Spock and Pike were up to? I don't remember if that was clearly stated in the episode....

We don't learn from the episode what Spock knew or didn't know. We do learn that the Talosians were toying with Kirk all the way back on SB11, by having him chase Spock in a shuttlecraft with a fake Commodore Mendez. So apparently Talosian plans were in motion early on, and quite plausibly involved Spock from the very start - either with or without his consent and knowledge.

Read the New Frontier novels. Her name is revealed there.

Yeah, yeah, I know, novels aren't canon, but I don't care.....
