NuKirk as reflective and literate as original Kirk?

Actually, if the next movie did feature Khan or a similarly deeply intelligent villain that could be a pretty cool opening.

TOS Kirk describes himself a "a brash young lieutenant" in A Private Little War, and in Shoreleave, he claims to have always wanted to "beat the tar out of Finnegan". But he did manage to grow a philosophical side as he matured. Perhaps his association with Spock can be credited for that, and hopefully NuSpock will have a similar influence on NuKirk.

NuKIRK: You? Spin Doctors?

NuMITCHELL: Once you get into them, they're rather simple though. Childish, almost.

nuKirk and Prime Kirk are the sum of their upbringings which wildly differ from one and other making them [literally] different people.

Actually, Kirk encountering Khan might be exactly the sort of event that would bring out his deeper side. Let's face it, Nero was no genius himself...there was no real pressure on Kirk in the first film -to- be thoughtful.

Khan though...especially if he starts out as an unknown...is exactly the sort of person whom you really need to be on guard around all the time...

Interesting perspective. One thing I really love about "Space Seed" is how Khan is very much a mirror image of Kirk in terms of leadership skill and strategic ability. Almost the only thing different about them besides Khan's strength is their differing morals (Khan even uses Kirk's old tactic of seducing one of the enemy's women). So, if in ST12, Khan was there, and portrayed that way, I think it could cause Kirk to have to rise to that level.

But then, let's face it; TWoK is a lot more popular than Space Seed, and in that, Khan was a lot more like Nero.

I'm actually hoping that Chris Pine's degree in English Lit at UCLA (or was it Berkeley?) steers him to push for a slightly more egghead-y nuKirk than we've seen thus far.

I don't know if the writers would be looking at nuKirk that way. Considering a lot of big budget movies these days want action over steady character development, it would be a lot harder to show nuKirk as having the literary background as Kirk Prime. Mainly because the movies now are probably going to stand alone whereas the original set of movies played off of the TV series.

Also, I'm not sure how much of my generation and younger (I'm 30) would be as well-versed in the classics (or would it be more ancient texts in the Trek unvierse?) as previous generations and would appreciate such a character. I think it would be behoove the writers to show more of Kirk's intelligence in the next movie. We know he's clever, brash, and impulsive but I'd like to see more smart out of him. Unless they are going to rely solely on Spock to be the smart one.

I was struck by something in TUC the other day. If you take the "let them die" exchange between Kirk & Spock and reverse it, you come pretty close to NuKirk & NuSpock at the end of IX regarding rescuing Nero & crew.

nuKirk: "I don't like deeply intelligent villains. They give me a bellyache and I've got a beauty right now."

:)

Wow!! That is very interesting!

But strangely, not unexpected! ;)

Oooh - but is it an homage or a sneaky two fingers up at a franchise whose more contemplative approach has had its day? Ah who am I kidding, that went out with TMP and since an awful lot of people argue that TMP is a very flawed movie, I must assume that the majority of people want a more action-driven revamp! :p
