nuCapt nuSulu nuSeries?

Series of films, not a television series, for if/when Pine and Quinto decide to go on to other things. Which is pretty much what the plan was for Takei. TPTB didn't build those massive Excelsior bridge set for "The Undiscovered Country" for just the few scenes that appeared in that film, but planned to reuse that set, again and again. And there's a reason that when Sulu bid farewell to Kirk, his whole bridge crew was gathered around him like a cast promo pic. Because that's pretty much what it was. It was intended as our formal introduction to the crew and set of what would have become the Enterprise B in later films. It was meant to be a passing of the torch scene.

See, I thought this was a joke thread right up to here.

Eh, I know it's early in the nu-franchise, and this thread probably isn't meant to be taken too seriously, but I'd like to see the actors take a different path than the old ones. As in not letting Chris Pine become like Shatner, stealing lines, flubbing other people's scenes, so that if ever gets to the point where it would make sense to have Sulu take command, it would go a lot smoother than in the Prime universe.

Ah, yes, so he's then booted out of the franchise altogether.

That's what's so silly about Takei's (and his fans') desire to see Sulu promoted, saying that he 'deserves' it. You promote him or any other cast member to their own command, and they're effectively written out of the cast. You'd then have to find convoluted ways to bring them back for every outing. It worked OK in TUC, but each time Worf came back for the TNG movies, the reasons to have him come along were progressively weaker.

In the early Khan script, Sulu was a few weeks away from getting his first command. This would have botched the actor's opportunities to appear in the later movies. Of course, they could have left the lines indicating Sulu's upcoming command intact in WOK and used the events of TSFS (stealing the Enterprise, etc) as a reason why he was later barred from taking a command at that point, but there's no good reason for it.

It worked out fine the way it happened. It was a good send-off for the character of Sulu to show him in command of the Excelsior, because it was the last TOS outing.

I dunno. It's possible, but I think feature films like we're getting would work well enough. What I would like to see is a CGI Star Trek series.

Um... wait... is George Takei dead? Have I not been paying attention? Because unless I'm completely out of touch, he's still young enough to do a sequel HIMSELF, set maybe ten years after TUC or something.:vulcan:

Did you not see how truly awful Takei's (and Grace Lee Whitney's) acting was in "Flashback"?

Subject everyone to that every week and expect them to like it? No thank you.

Trek's problem was that there were just too many incarnations of it on tv, and at the same time movies were being released. The producers just got too damned greedy and poisoned their own well. It got too saturated and watered-down, with each successive new version being weaker than what had followed it before = the death of Star Trek. I say, leave it as theatrical movies, with this new, well-liked cast, and it will do well.

No more Star Trek: The next bloody thing, K? Greed killed it once, never again, I say....
