Nu-Q: Recast the Omnipotent!

It's even been stated that the Q weren't even interested in humanity until they'd reached the level seen in TNG. I don't think ST11's Kirk would register with him.

That's already been contradicted by more recent stories. Besides, I'm not sure the word "until" means quite the same thing to them.

I've looked on Wikipedia, and there hasn't been any new Q since 1998.

I like him. I think he should be less comedic, though.

To the Q, "until now" might mean "the last couple of hundred years". I certainly don't think there is that much difference between the Federation and Starfleet in TNG and TOS outside of their access to technology.

Matt Frewer.

Sure, he's much older, but he's in good shape, and has the attitude. And he's always the most interesting thing on screen. He can be that superior, arrogant being testing humanity. He can also do the humor when necessary. And best of all, he can be frightening and funny at the same time.

That's the one issue with DeLancie..... He went from intimidating to foolish at the drop of a hat, when there were points where he could have done both and really impressed everyone.

Matt Frewer can do that. Also, Matt Frewer can easily play somebody with the power of a God because, well, Matt Frewer is God, so he has experience.

I honestly can't see what is wrong with John De Lancie.

He's a great actor, knows the Q back-to-front, plays him well and has even written a book about him.

He IS the Q!

No one is saying there's anything wrong with De Lanice. But that's the point of the question. It's a hypothetical. IF they somehow, magcially, had an amazing Q script that no one could deny and IF John De Lancie fell off a cliff in New Zealand tomorrow, who would you choose?

Bruce Campbell?

Sam Witwer?

Kathy Griffin?

Stewie Griffin? (nah, that's type casting)

I think that Willem Dafoe has just the right combination of sinister and funny to pull off a role like Q without hamming it up too much.

Actually I'd be amused to see one of the regulars of Monty Python toying with this idea of "Q". I'd like to see a re-appearance of the alledged 'Squire Of Gothos' with Q's son "Q2" & wife in a cameo.
John Cleese!

Maybe Angus Macfadyen? Or Bill Nighy, but he seems to be in everything these days, as great as he is.
Yes to Nighy, NO to Macfadyen, he is a horrible actor and overacts so much he makes every character he plays a caricature.

Milla Jovovich

(Hey, I hate Q, so I'm going for  instead of "right-for-the-part".)
Well in that case, Summer Glau. ;)
Even as a joke, at least you could come up with a hot actress who is at least somewhat talented (so, no to Milla) and a least a little Q-ish (no to Summer, who is great in certain type of roles but has none of the mischieviousness and humor for the role). There are loads of hot actresses who'd make a much better Q than those two. Like Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhoff, Kristen Bell, Lucy Lawless...
