Nu-Q: Recast the Omnipotent!

Let's say a script came along for the next Trek movie that involved Q meeting the NuTrek characters that was so freaking amazing that even the most jaded fans would agree was spectacular. While we could just use the old Q, let's say this is an alternate version of Q -- or, perhaps, a fragment of Q who transcends timelines. Whatever.

Who would you cast as Q?

How would Q fit into an action-orientated film? He's more philosphical, isn't he?

I can't see even Shatner's Kirk being able to handle Q, let alone Pine's.

He would just swing at him!

I want Q in the next film and I want him played by the same actor but all I want to see of Q is a background view of him as a tribute to the character. We could see him in a bar in the background being his rowdy self but he doesn't interact with the crew.

For all the long term old Trek fans they will immediately know it's Q and it will be an "oh my God that's awesome" moment.

Just have Q be like Mr Rourke from the 1998 version of Fantasy Island. The sinister-seeming fellow who in the end was out to help those he tormented one way or another.

Q, ultimately, could be anyone to play the part. We have seen that there were numerous incarnations of Q during the series. I agree, though, the original actor would still do fine. I just don't see much of a reason to have Q in a film.

I can't see how Q would interact with Pine's Kirk.

It's even been stated that the Q weren't even interested in humanity until they'd reached the level seen in TNG. I don't think ST11's Kirk would register with him.

Actually I'd be amused to see one of the regulars of Monty Python toying with this idea of "Q". I'd like to see a re-appearance of the alledged 'Squire Of Gothos' with Q's son "Q2" & wife in a cameo.

That'd be a good idea!

[Scene in a Federation Bar]

Chekov: You are a wery strange fellow. I do not vishh to talk to you anymore...

Q: Oh really? Let me put a bug in your ear (haw!) I'm a very powerful person. I can make you the captain of the Enterprise! I'm omnipotent!

Chekov: Oh really? And I am the Tsar of all Russias.....

Anything more than a brief, two second cameo though, is too much. Q's omnipotent. Omnipotency doesn't make for entertaining movies, unless they're religious. Q simply can't translate to the big screen well, in my opinion. On the television show, he was an interesting "villian" because he'd bother the crew for an hour, and just go away. But who wants to pay ten bucks to see Q snap his fingers for two hours, and then go away? No challenge, no way to "beat" him, no audience investment. After they figure out that they just wasted two hours of their time waiting for Kirk & the Gang to beat him, and he just goes away, there'd probably be some pretty upset people...

In a nu-trek film, I could imagine Q fitting in as an extradimensional warmonger, who is testing human psychology. He may put pieces in place and set a stage for two races to confront each other with risk of a very nasty battle, and attributing any deaths not to himself, but to their barbaric war like personalities that they are unable to rise above.

The victory which Kirk makes would be to win the mind game, and prove Q wrong.

That would fit in with TOS depictment of superior aliens, that's for sure. They all turned out to be power mad or flawed or unfeeling. I think Picard's reaction to the Q was that he was reluctant to push the photon torpedo button and thought a bit before attacking and tried to understand and negotiate.
