Now Kevin Smith says Star Trek almost as good as Dark Knight

I don't know, I thought DK was good, but not great.
I think it did very well because of a few reasons including the fact that it had no other real competition at the time it was released and it had so much hype, especially with the death of Ledger and all. Ledger was amazing and of course stole the show as was expected.
Bale as Batman just doesn't work well for me and I am a huge Batman fan both in comics and movies so don't get me wrong.
Not sure all the reasons why but his growling when he talks as Batman is just silly for one.
I don't know. I just see it as a missed opportunity to have a better Batman this time, deeper and more complex with what he is going through as really two different people at times, but they seem to give most of that to the bad guys and not the bat man. I am glad it did well of course so there will be more films. I just hope they get better as they go along and Bale drops the growling and that they finally get his ears fixed correctly on his mask

I thought TDK was very good, but not fantastic. I was impressed by Ledger's performance but without it the movie would have been mediocre. I think I will enjoy Trek XI more.

Nothing against The Dark Knight -- since I did generally enjoy it -- but I'm sort of hoping that Star Trek will be better than that.

That's not really the point though, is it? It doesn't really matter what you or anyone else thought about TDK, despite everyone giving their opinions on it in this thread, all that matters is what Kevin Smith thinks about it because he's using his opinion of the film as a point of comparison to Trek XI.

Smith thought TDK was fantastic, so that bodes well for Trek XI if you trust his opinion and track record, which I do.

^^While it is relevant and does bode well for ST that Kevin Smith's "educated" opinion is that Star Trek and The Dark Knight are of similar qualilty, what IS irrelevant (to me) is that Smith thought TDK was better than ST.

As I indicated in my post, I do value his opinion in general, but whether or not ST will be better than TDK is an entirely subjective opinion based on the likes and dislikes of each moviegoer. I could value Smith's general assessment as meaningful, but still hope for Star Trek to be a better film -- and may discover it IS a better film (in my opinion) once I see it.

But, yes, it is a good sign for a film to be favorably compared to The Dark Knight by someone in the movie industry and someone who understands the sci-fi movie culture. I never disputed that point.

I'm still kicking myself for watching Batman Begins all the way through, waiting for something good. Instead, what I perceived was one insult to the audience after another right to the end.

If someone who has seen J.J.'s Trek likens it to The Dark Knight, which I have no intention of seeing, to me that's a bad sign, save for the idea that the movie, whether I like it or not, may pave the way for another Trek series. Even then, I would want a new series to be set in the 24th or 25th century.

The Dark Knight was AWESOME!!!

It was the most intense movie I'd ever seen! Great story, great dialogue, great performences by all!

Heath Ledger as The Joker was SUPERB!

Well, I know there are those that disagree, and that's fine. I thought the TDK was not only the best comic book movie I've seen, It was the best movie I've seen in two years. I hope ST is in that league from a story and acting standpoint.

I'm hopeful, but I want May to be here NOW.

It may have been based on a comic book hero but the Batman version in TDK was nothing like the Batman in the comics.
First and foremost the suit for Batman in TDK is totally armor and Batman in the comics never had armor, he used stealth, surprise and fear.

So what is so interesting about this is that fans and movie goers allowed that to not be a big deal and made TDK the movie this years block buster. I hope the new Trek movie is good enough that fans and movie goers will do the same for it as well.
