Now It Bugs Me (Sword of Kahless)

I don't rate The Sword of Kahless, so I try not to pay too much attention to it on a rewatch. Lots of OOC moments are prevalent.

As for the question of Klingons on DS9, it's a funny one. I think the show would have been just fine without the Klingon war, as they were already building up the Dominion story by the end of season three. They did actually strengthen the show overall, and Worf was a good addition to the cast.

I like Klingons in general just fine, and most of the Klingon-centric stories are at least OK, and some quite good overall in both TNG and DS9. To me, Worf has a good addition to the cast as well.

I think adding the Klingon war into the mix was simply to strengthen the Dominion, and show how their existence can have major repercussions without the Dominion actually doing very much at all.

I think almost everyone is kind of right, here. I liked Worf a lot and he added great value to the show, I also liked the Klingons in general a lot and thought they added great value to the show. I can't even imagine DS9's final season without the whole Worf/Martok/Gowron plot (and especially Ezri's analysis of the Empire). Yet, at the same time, the writers seemed to run both Worf and the Klingons in general off the rails more often than just about any other character/group except for the Ferengi (who were nothing but a joke to begin with). The bizarre saga of Kurn. The bizarre saga of Alexander (even though parts of it were actually fun). Looking for Parmach. The Sword of Kahless. Etc...

I just wanted to point out that the Sword is not magical. I don't know if the poster meant that figuratively or not, but I totally bought it that they lore of the Sword and what it could do to reunite the Klingons for a glorious future is what drove Kor and Worf to do things they otherwise wouldn't do. But I too was disappointed that they just left it in space (in all reality never to be seen again); at the least they should have entrusted it to Jadzia to hide somewhere for the "day where it is truly needed." Also, why no mention of the resurrected Kahless? Surely he would have wielded the sword appropriately.

It's been a while since I watched that episode, but I seem to remember at the time thinking "how come they don't mention the Emperor?" Maybe I should rewatch it.

Note: according to Memory Alpha, Kor makes a mention of paraphrasing 'that it would require a true warrior to unite the Klingon people, not someone like Gowron or even the reborn Emperor Kahless'. So I guess they do mention him. I guess that what bugged me, that they could fight among themselves but not at least try to have it work by having Jadzia take the sword to Kahless.

I think Kor says that after he decides he should be the one to take the sword and unite the Klingons. I could have sworn that Kor and Worf had discussed returning it to Kahless himself until they both had ideas of keeping the sword themselves.

Worf talks about giving the sword to the Emperor, but Kor says he's a toothless figurehead.

No I don't have instant recall, the episode just happened be next in my rewatch. And again I found it annoying, what with the mystical control over Kor and Worf, making them do annoying things. It's a shame as there is a lot of interesting dialogue in the episode, and it's great to see Kor again.

Whilst we're discussing the emperor, I want to ask why did we never see Kahless again? In this episode we heard he condemned Gowron's invasion of Cardassia. It's quite strange after the lengths TNG went through to make him appear. Rightful Heir was a pretty good episode too.

What do you mean by "mystical control"? I don't think there was anything mystical about it. They both acted stupid after realizing they could gain power with the sword. I don't think the sword had any supernatural power over them.

But yes, it is strange we don't see Kahless again. You'd think that he would appeared at least at some point over the course of DS9.

Loved Worf. If the show became about Klingons and Worf, I would have loved it.

That said, beaming the sword of Kahless into space seemed like a terrible waste. But maybe the clone of Kahless got to find and use it later.

I just realised my error. I think seeing the episode again made me groggy. ;)

I wasn't very clear at all was I? I didn't mean mystical, I was trying to convey my feelings in a gilb way, as I've always thought the sword-inspired silliness was, well, silly.

I've probably seen it 3 or 4 times. Last couple viewings, first I thought the SoK was supposed to be exuding some mystical power over Worf and Kor, turning them into a-holes... which seriously bugged me, since this is supposed to be science fiction. Next time, no. It just seemed that lust for the Sword brought out the worst in them. Which also bugged me, since they had only just shoehorned the character of Worf into DS9, and now they were making him thoroughly unpleasant, and intolerable to be around.

I'd thought they'd originally gotten the DNA to clone Kahless FROM his sword...
-------------------------
They got rid of the sword at the end because no Klingon could be trusted not to go destructively nuts because of it. Giving it to Dax wouldn't exactly put it beyond Worf's reach. A waste to get rid of it? It might be needed someday? I think they have better can openers than that in the 24th century. I think they should have thrown it into a star, to melt it down completely.
