November Challenge - The Lost Model Kits

monodox

Lieutenant Junior Grade

It seems that as the winner of the October Art Challenge, I have the duty of selecting a subject for the November Challenge. See if you can come up with an image/box art of a Star Trek model kit that you would have liked to have seen the light of day.
As an example here is a promotional image that I came up for the folks over at Starship Ajax.

(As always, the challenge ends at midnight, PST, on the last day of the month - 11/30/15 - and e-mail your final entry to Ptrope at ptrope at gmail dot com. Also, in addition to any individual thread you start, add your entry to this thread so we know who is actually entering the challenge.)

Great idea, monodox! This isn't an entry, of course, since it wasn't done specifically for your challenge, but I hope it's a good example of what can be done:

...so is the challenge to produce the box art, w/a model or other view as a bonus?

Does it have to be the glue/snap-together type of model? Would box art for a Trek-themed LEGO set fit into the scope of the challenge?

When we say "lost model kits".....are we talking about ships that were seen on the various shows? Or can we include, as per the first two examples, non-cannon and completely made up ships as well?

I'm pretty stoked to enter this one as I've been intending to do an old school style model box for awhile, but it's never been a top priority. This will give me a reason to come up with something.

Also....what Klaus asked.

I don't know if monodox will answer, but I'd go with the widest interpretation of the challenge possible, if only to encourage more entries. So that would mean a "yes" to box art only, box art plus bonus model view, LEGO, and non-canon ships (one of which Ptrope has already posted as his entry), but that's just my interpretation.

^^ Respectfully disagree with the widest aspect of that.

What's the point of being a contest winner and posting a challenge if people feel free to ignore what you posted. "A Star Trek model kit that you would have liked to have seen the light of day" is the limiting factor that makes it a challenge. The wording and example provided certainly allow for canon and non-canon designs, but IMO, it shouldn't include toys that aren't model kits in the same way it shouldn't include model kits that aren't Star Trek.;)
I would also suggest that a design that I created yesterday was not what monodox was challenging me to use. More likely, I'm to use one of the many designs, official and unofficial, that are scattered across the shows and publications of the last fifty years. One that was never a model kit.

That would be my interpretation, FWIW.

My WIP for this contest with still lots to do (the box border is not mine and is a place holder):

^ Going by past challenges, if there's enough entries that month, Ptrope will usually make it multiple choice voting.

Don't forget! Tonight's the night! Midnight PST is the deadline to both post your final entry in this thread AND to e-mail it to your humble mod @ ptrope at gmail dot com. We have some individual threads out there, and at least one WIP in this thread - let's get those models on display where they belong! :D

Okey-dokey, fokeys! I have entries from the following:

Kail
The Lensman
BK613
Ptrope

I know there are at least a couple more threads out there - the poll hasn't gone up, if you're planning to get in on it. Don't be left ... outside the box!

I say just enter the last pix posted in those threads. Those folks did some nice work, and it'd be a shame not to enter them

YMMV tho. :)

Please let's not set that precedent. Ptrope should not be responsible for divining who did or did not intend to enter, WIP threads not withstanding. I know I would be annoyed if a WIP of mine was tossed up as an entry when I didn't finish and had decided not to enter. That is my choice and not his. ;)

Besides, how burdensome is it to email a picture, really? Or post a finished image in the contest thread? :)

Fair enough. I just hate to see Forbin and Solarbaby get left out, those were nice pix. :)
